ECED& 160 Curriculum Development (5 credits)

Course Description
Investigate learning theory, program planning, and tools for curriculum development promoting language, fine/gross motor, social-emotional, cognitive and creative skills and growth in young children (birth-age 8).

Course Content
A. Early learning theories applicable to curriculum development
B. National Association for the Education of Young Children Developmentally Appropriate Practices and Washington State Early Learning Guidelines
C. Current trends in curriculum development (theme-based, emergent, inquiry-based, integrated, project approach)
D. Cultural considerations and environmental approaches in curriculum development
E. Selection of curricular topics to address whole child development
F. Curriculum planning (organizing the curriculum / the curricular Web)
G. Curriculum planning and implementation for group processes (large and small groups)
H. Implementing, assessing, and revising the curricular plans
I. Elements of quality literature for children
J. Developmentally based and culturally sensitive literature selection and curricular planning

Student Outcomes
1. Explain major early childhood curriculum theories and current trends in curriculum design for early learning environments.

2. Apply principles of developmentally, individually and culturally appropriate practice when designing, implementing and evaluating curriculum.

3. Evaluate integrated learning experiences supportive of children’s development and learning incorporating national, state and local standards.

4. Design curriculum that supports children’s language/communication, cognitive, social/emotional, fine/gross motor and creative development.

5. Design curriculum that is inclusive and represents the diversity of children and families.

6. Plan developmentally appropriate activities and schedules, which promote all children’s growth and learning.

7. Observe, document and assess individual and group needs, interests and skills for the purpose of curriculum planning and on-going modifications of plans.

USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES Students implement a wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches, instructional strategies, and tools to connect with children and families and positively influence each child’s development and learning, which will vary depending on children’s ages, characteristics, and the early childhood setting.

    4a: Discuss how supportive relationships and positive interactions are the foundation of their work with young children.

    4b: List and implement effective instructional and guidance strategies and tools for early education, including appropriate uses of technology.

    4c: Use a broad repertoire of developmentally appropriate teaching/learning and guidance approaches.

    4d: Reflect on their own practice to promote positive outcomes for each child.

Information Competency: Graduates will be able to seek, find, evaluate and use information and employ information technology to engage in lifelong learning.
