ECED& 180 Language and Literacy Development (3 credits)

Course Description
Develop teaching strategies for language acquisition and literacy skill development at each developmental stage (birth-age 8) through the four interrelated areas of speaking, listening, writing, and reading.

Course Content
A. Theoretical perspectives regarding language acquisition
B. Contexts of language acquisition
C. Children’s language development from birth to age 8
D. Developmentally appropriate role of the teacher in support of language and literacy acquisition
E. The development of phonemic awareness
F. Appropriate and culturally relevant language and literacy strategies, environments, and activities in early learning programs
G. The developmental continuum of reading and writing acquisition
H. Selection criteria of quality literature for young children
I. Presentation techniques and lesson planning for children’s literature

Student Outcomes
1. Explain the continuum of language acquisition and early literacy skills.

2. Develop evidence-based, appropriate environments and opportunities that support children’s emergent language and literacy skills.

3. Describe strategies for responding to children who are culturally, linguistically, and ability diverse.

4. Develop ways to facilitate family and child interactions as primary contexts for heritage language and English development.

5. Analyze images of culture and individual abilities reflected in children’s literature and other learning materials.

6. Utilize developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive assessment practices for documenting the growth of language and literacy skills.

     5a: Explain content knowledge and resources in academic disciplines: language and literacy; the arts – music, creative movement, dance, drama, visual arts; mathematics; science; physical education – physical activity, health, and safety; and social studies.

     5b: Recognize and apply the central concepts, inquiry tools, and structures of content areas or academic disciplines.

     5c: Use their own knowledge, appropriate early learning outcomes, and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate developmentally meaningful and challenging curriculum for each child.

Effective Communication: Graduates will be able to exchange messages in a variety of contexts using multiple methods.
