Course Description
Develop skills to provide developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant activities and care, specifically: preparing the environment, implementing curriculum, building relationships, guiding academic /social skill development, and community outreach.

Course Content
A. Building reciprocal and culturally sensitive relationships with children and families
B. Effective environments for school aged children that are: bias free, developmentally appropriate, promote a positive sense of self and social competence and interaction
C. Guidance strategies to promote academic and social growth and development
D. Curriculum planning and program implementation
E. State and local school age care regulations and procedures
F. Resources for school age care programs

Student Outcomes
1. Describe the physical, cognitive, social and emotional stages of children ages 5-12.

2. Develop a plan to create reciprocal and culturally sensitive relationships with children and families.

3. Analyze the effectiveness of an environment and recommend changes that are culturally retentive, developmentally appropriate, and conducive to positive social interactions.

4. Identify guidance strategies that promote cognitive and social growth in the context of school age care environment.

5. Describe state and local school age care regulations and procedures related to group size, health, nutrition and safety.

6. Describe strategies supporting curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive.

7. Identify community resources supporting school age care/youth development program personnel.

PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING Students use their understanding of child development – including young children’s unique characteristics and needs, and the multiple interacting influences on children’s development and learning – to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child.

     1a: Describe young children’s diverse characteristics and needs, from birth through age 8.

     1b: Explain the multiple influences on early development and learning.

     1c: Use knowledge of child development to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments for young children.
