HSEM 130 Technology and Emergency Management (3 credits)



Prerequisite HSEM 102  or HSEM 105   with at least a 2.0 grade (or concurrently enrolled).

Course Description
This class provides a detailed overview of the technology used and applied in the field of emergency management. Students will learn how to utilize technology in emergency planning, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts and they will identify key elements that must be in place for technology to enhance the emergency management process.

F. Emergency Management Decision Support Systems: Using Data to Manage Disasters 
G. Hazards Analysis and Modeling: Predicting the Impact 
H. Warning Systems: Alerting the Public to Danger 
I. Operational Problems and Technology: Making Technology Work for You 
J. Trends in Technology

Student Outcomes
  1. Compare the range of technologies available for emergency management use.   
  2. Utilize technology and access data.    
  3. Identify legal, ethical, and social elements in the employment of a technology.  
  4. Demonstrate a working level knowledge of developments in technology. 
  5. Research the potential impact of new technologies on emergency management.


Degree Outcomes
Program Outcome: 

Develop agency/organization specific tools to evaluate specific domestic security challenges for the 21st Century that face the United States and other industrialized nations. 

Graduates apply a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to assume leadership roles in emergency management, homeland security, and/or public policy. 

Recognize how to access and disseminate information through multiple agencies in order to forecast the risks, types, and orders of magnitude of terrorist threats most likely to confront the nation/state.
