HUMDV 103 Pierceworks! - Career Transition (1 to 14 credits)



Course Description
A 7-week career transition course to assist individuals with components of career development and human relations. This course empowers students to explore careers and career clusters and make informed educational and career decisions. Students analyze interests, skills, personality, and attributes and use this information in the career selection process. Students use interest inventories and computer software to explore career opportunities available to them and link personal interests with related career fields. Activities enable students to increase self awareness and develop the skills necessary to successfully plan for postsecondary education and the workplace. Basic job search skills include contacting employers, writing, practicing interview skills. An emphasis is placed on developing appropriate skills necessary for success in the workforce. These employability skills include such areas as: teamwork, dependability, punctuality, attitude and relationship skills on the job.

P. Develop/Increase computer skills

Student Outcomes
1. Identify work values and attitudes. These include personal qualities such as dependability, punctuality, responsibility, integrity, team work, diversity, positive attitude.

2. Develop and apply positive relationship skills.

3. Analyze personality, career interests, values and aptitude assessments an apply tools to make realistic educational career choices.

4. Research career information using the Internet, community and library resources.

5. Set short and long-term personal and career goals.

6. Create and use a dependable strengths report during job search.

7. Create a hard copy, scan able and electronic resume and submit.

8. Interview using appropriate oral skills and body language in telephone, one-on-one, panel and group interview settings.

9. Complete a Master Job Application.

10. Learn and apply the tools to manage change.

11. Work effectively in culturally diverse teams to complete project assignments.

12. Prepare a variety of business correspondences including cover letter, thank you letter, letters of application and introduction.

13. Use software to format resumes, dependable strengths report, master application and business correspondence.

14. Identify decision making steps.

15. Follow written and oral instructions.

16. Think creatively, make decisions and solve problems applicable to work place situations.

Degree Outcomes
Multiculturalism Through workplace focused diversity training and class discussions, students are exposed to a variety of perspectives. Students learn to work effectively in culturally diverse teams to complete project assignments. Effective Communication Verbal and interpersonal communication skills are demonstrated through: • Class discussions • Numerous small group activities • Learning and applying effective oral interviewing techniques. In addition, focus is also place on non-verbal communication (body language). Practice and preparation is provided for phone, one-on-one, panel and group interviews Written Communication skills are demonstrated and technological skills are applied by producing: • Business correspondence, including cover letters, letters of application, letters of introduction, and thank you notes • Master Job Application • Dependable Strengths Report • Resumes (scan able, hard copy, and electronic) Responsibility Students examine themselves and understand their role in career planning. They apply assessment results and Unlocking Your Potential tools to personal abilities and attributes in order to make realistic career choices and implement a course of action. Personal qualities needed in the workplace, such as dependability, punctuality, accountability, integrity, teamwork, understanding diversity and a positive attitude are acknowledged and demonstrated. Students is capable of working with others to complete tasks, solve problems, resolve conflicts, provide information, and offer support. Information Competency Students are able to locate, understand, and use internet and library career exploration resources. They selectively use the most appropriate technological tools in order to access and manipulate career information. Information competency is also shown by applying information-seeking strategies to locate a career field that best supports personal strengths and interests. • Listens carefully • Uses learning resources appropriately • Organizes information productively • Demonstrates appropriate reading strategies • Asks questions Critical, Creative and Reflective Thinking As essential feature of this course is the amount of self-exploration and reflection done by students. Creative thinking is encouraged through the use of humor, role playing and innovative group activities. The process of setting and achieving short and long-term goals is introduced. Students use experience, reason and information to identify post-secondary courses and major areas of interest that meet tentative career plans.
