KINS 253 Lifestyle and Weight Management (2 credits)



Course Description
This course introduces students the relationship between body composition, diet, physical activity, exercise and body weight and their impact on one’s health.  Students will explore the factors that influence body composition and body weight to develop strategies in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.  

Course Content
A. Health and Performance Measurements: Body Mass Index, Body Weight, Body Composition, Circumferences
B.  Nutrition principles, dieting, and exercise
C.  Physiological, Genetic, Environmental and Cultural factors
D.  Symptoms of Eating disorders and disordered eating
E.  Behavior change theory
F.   Racism and wellness

Student Outcomes
  1. Describe safe dietary practices and exercise prescriptions for reducing the risk of chronic diseases and performance enhancement.   
  2. Describe the strengths and limitations of health and performance measurement methods (e.g., body mass index, waist circumference, and body composition methods), and interpretation of results.  
  3. Examine prejudicial structures and attitudes around weight and weight discrimination.

Critical, Creative, and Reflective Thinking: Graduates will evaluate, analyze, synthesize, and generate ideas; construct informed, meaningful, and justifiable conclusions; and process feelings, beliefs, biases, strengths, and weaknesses as they relate to their thinking, decisions, and creations.

Program Outcome: Identify and explain nutrition, health and safety practices and procedures appropriate for use when training clients.
