KINS 263 Sport and Exercise Psychology (3 credits)



Course Description
A course designed to introduce students to the study of people and their behaviors in sports and exercise settings. Students will also identify innovative strategies for use in coaching and facilitating both lifestyle change and performance enhancement. 

Course Content
A. Psychological characteristics of peak performance
B. Goal setting for peak performance
C. Arousal-performance relationships
D. Relaxation and energizing techniques for arousal regulation
E. Imagery techniques and application
F. Cognitive techniques for building confidence
G. Psychological considerations regarding injury risk and rehabilitation
H. Gender and cultural considerations
I. Integration of course content to create a mental skills training progam
J. Theories of motivation and adherence
K. Leadership, group dynamics and cohesion

Student Outcomes
1. Articulate one’s own experiences of peak performance. 2. Demonstrate the techniques used to engage, motivate, build confidence, and assist with adherence to exercise and enhanced sports performance such as: goal setting, imagery, self-rating tools, cognitive techniques, and mental skills training. 3. Discuss the implementation and use of behavior management techniques for sports teams and group exercise settings. 4. Discuss and articulate the unique psychological factors related to injury and rehabilitation. 5. Compare and contrast various gender and cultural consideration for sport and exercise environments. 6. Demonstrate leadership techniques to enhance effective group dynamics and cohesion with sports teams.

Program Outcome: Students will identify and conduct themselves as members of the health and fitness profession by knowing and using ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to health and fitness practices as detailed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
