VT 123 Large Animal Nursing (4 credits)
Prerequisite Enrollment in the Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology.
Course Description Large animal husbandry techniques and procedures for basic restraint, assessment, and treatment of horses and food animals.
Course Content A. Large animal husbandry principles, health care and preventative medicine
B. Large animal species terminology
C. Large animal veterinary technician roles
D. Large animal restraining, medicating and laboratory sample collection techniques
E. Large animal anesthesia and surgical nursing
F. Large animal nursing skills
G. Large animal radiology techniques
H. Large animal anatomy and physiology
Student Outcomes 1. Explain the role of the veterinary technician in large animal practice.
2. Explain the need for the use of a variety of husbandry practices among various large animal species.
3. Discuss techniques used with specific species using proper terminology.
4. Explain and/or demonstrate the need and proper use of a variety of equipment and techniques to restrain, medicate, and collect laboratory samples from various large animal species.
5. Demonstrate large animal nursing skill by completing a given check list of laboratory skills.
