NURS 146 Foundations of Psychosocial Issues and Communication in Healthcare (2 credits)
Prerequisite Enrollment in the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
Course Description
Introduction to psychosocial issues across the lifespan with an emphasis on effective and therapeutic communication in healthcare, intercultural and professional communication, and working with diverse groups.

Therapeutic communication techniques with individuals, families and groups across the lifespan
Effective Communication strategies for positive patient outcomes
Special needs of diverse patient populations
Group processes and interactions of the healthcare team
Therapeutic communication related to safety
Health information for safe patient care
Student Outcomes
Describe how diverse cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds affect patient, family, and community values across the lifespan.
Discuss how a patient's values can affect communication style.
Identify ways to incorporate diverse patient population values into the nurse-patient relationship.
Apply teaching materials, online patient charting, interpreter services and other modalities to ensure holistic patient communication.
