FSLM 195 Fire Officer I (5 credits)



Course Description
This course is an introduction to a fire officer’s duties as written by the requirements of the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. Content includes leadership, supervisory and decision making practices, legal responsibilities, communication practices, report writing, workplace safety, quality assurance and pre-incident planning.

Student Outcomes
Utilize the principles of leadership and human resources in order to effectively establish assignments, manage behavior and accomplish change in accordance with established safety plans. Communicate the role, image, and mission of the department to the public through the process of customer service, budgeting, and records management. Implement departmental policies and procedures at the unit level according to established job performance requirements. Conduct inspections and investigations in order to identify hazards, address violations, secure an incident scene, preserve evidence in accordance and develop preincident surveys with established performance requirements. Synthesize knowledge of fire behavior and resource management through supervising emergency operations in accordance with the local emergency plan and according to established job performance requirements. Employ health and safety plans, policies, procedures, and standards into daily activities as well as at the emergency scene.
