Applied Business (AAS) Course Map

Created by Pierce faculty, this map outlines the initial coursework for this career field. It provides you a clear path to complete your degree by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career.  The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets degree requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time. While this map is a great guide to courses required to complete the Associate in Applied Science Applied Business, you are responsible for fulfilling all degree requirements. Questions? 1. College Success


  • Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

  •  

  • Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

2. English Composition I


  • Course purpose: Clear and strategic communication with others is a central feature of all careers connected to Business. The skills learned in ENGL 101 are foundational for later coursework and beyond. (Required courses for admission into the BAS in Applied Business Management.)

  • Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course.

3. Business Math


  • Course purpose: Business Mathematics offers applications in banking, merchandising, inventory, depreciation and promissory notes. You will also be introduced to simple statistics and the metric system.

  • Course purpose: Professional Development sets the stage for workplace success by providing career success strategies and tools. Move from “I can’t…” or “I think I can…” to “I can!” Dig deep into who you are in terms of strengths and personal qualities/characteristics.

8. Survey of Accounting


  • Course purpose: Basic knowledge of accounting is critical for all aspects of business as financial misunderstanding is one of the leading causes of business failure. This course explores the fundamental theories and concepts of accounting.

9. Survey of Economics


  • Course purpose: To be a knowledgeable business professional, it is important for you to understand various factors that can affect business decisions. This course will open your eyes to what actually influences how businesses behave.

11. Principles of Marketing


  • Course purpose: Marketing is foundational across all aspects of business. You will learn about the business activities concerned with the flow of goods and services from producers to consumers from a marketing perspective.

  • Course purpose: A successful business professional is able to effectively address management problems. Through this course you will learn how to apply the principles and practices of management in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Option A: Human Resource Management/Management


Option B: Project Management


  • Course purpose: Good project management skills saves a company time, money, and resources. In this course you will learn about the Initiate and Plan Process Groups tools and techniques to build a project plan. BUS 260 is part one of a two-part series. BUS 261 is the second course in this series.

Option C: Entrepreneurship


  • Course purpose: Social media is how businesses are connecting with consumers. As a business professional you need basic understanding of how social media can impact brand recognition, increase traffic to company websites, and reach specific audiences.

Option A: Human Resource Management


  • Course purpose: Explores current human resource issues including local, state, and federal labor laws; effective recruitment and selection techniques using behaviorally-anchored structured interview format; training and development strategies using competency-based individual development plans; 360-degree performance review; and how to write employee policy manuals and job descriptions.

Option B: Project Management (earns Certificate in Project Management)


  • Course purpose: Good project management skills saves a company time, money, and resources. In BUS 261 you will learn about the Execute, Monitor/Control, and Close Process Groups tools and techniques to build a project plan. BUS 261 is part two of a two-part series. BUS 260 is the first course in this series.
