1. College Success

• COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)

• Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

  • Successfully completing either COLLG 110 or COLLG 115 will fulfill the College Success requirement. 

  • A COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

2. English Composition I

• ENGL& 101 English Composition I (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Artists need to communicate in a variety of ways, including in writing. Clear and strategic communication with others is a central feature of all careers in the arts. The skills learned in ENGL 101 are foundational for later course work and beyond.

• Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course. 

3. Art Design

• ART 101 Beginning Design (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This is a common “Foundations” course in many art programs. This course provides you with a foundational understanding of the elements and principles of design.

4. Art Drawing

• ART 111 Beginning Drawing (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This is a common “Foundations” course in many art programs. This course provides you with foundational understanding of observational drawing which will be useful in future studio courses.

• Course purpose: This class can help an art major become more familiar with the stunning visuals and science of our own galaxy and beyond. Learning about such topics could inspire and even change the art work of many aspiring students.

• Course purpose: When selecting Social Sciences courses, we recommend courses that  touch on the importance of “history” and “humans” as these have direct relations to  Art History. Archaelogy also involves hands-on type projects related to excavation.

• ANTH& 206 Cultural Anthropology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: When selecting Social Sciences courses, we recommend courses that  touch on the importance of “history” and “humans” as these have direct relations to  Art History. Understanding the role of art in culture is valuable for educators and creators of art.

Meet with an art instructor to discuss career options and “Art Pathways” with your advisor. Do you intend to be an Educator? A Studio Artist? An Art Historian? Answering similar questions will help determine what certain other Art courses may be best for you.

• ART 145 History of Art - Contemporary (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This is good class to add depth to the knowledge based on history. This course in particular focuses on the “current” art world.

• ART 243 History of Art - Ancient World Through the Middle Ages (5 credits)

• Course purpose: It is imperative that art students be able to examine Art History to see the importance of what has happened and how that affects what IS happening in the art world.

• Course purpose: It is imperative that art students be able to examine Art History to see the importance of what has happened and how that affects what IS happening in the art world.

10. Art Painting

• ANTH& 236 Forensic Anthropology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This course is designed to help you identify human remains. Art students interested in the human form may be interested in this science lab option.

• BIOL& 175 Human Biology w/Lab: Anatomy & Physiology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Human Biology and Anatomy would be an ideal course for any art student who is interested in incorporating the human form / figures into their practice. An understanding of the human body and systems will make your physical depictions of the human body much stronger.

• GEOL& 101 Introduction to Physical Geology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: The course reviews the composition of the Earth over time including natural events that impact and continue to shape our world. 

• GEOL& 103 Historical Geology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This course covers the development of the Earth over time to what it is today. You will learn about the formation and creation of continents as well as the current challenges of climate change.

• GEOL& 110 Environmental Geology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This course covers the impact of humans on the Earth and of Earth on humans. This is important not only to the creation of art materials, but will impact an understanding of the environment – both as an issue, and as an aid in creating landscape based visuals. Proper disposal of wastes and pollution will be a useful topic as it relates to artists and responsibility toward the environment.

• Course purpose: This class can be a good foundation for you to understand the economic impacts of a career in the arts. Budgets, profit margins, and money management skills will be a need skill set for a working designer and artist alike.

• Course purpose: Artist creativity can grow once the natural world is examined in this class. Landscape paintings and other depictions of our own natural world can improve after the successful completion of this course.

• GEOG 200 Human Geography (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Many of the most drawn and painted subjects are examined in this class topics include: landscapes, languages, migrations, nations, regions, and religions. 

13. Biological Anthropology

• Course purpose: Learning about “history” and “humans” have direct relationship to Art History. Evolution and genetic variation are topics covered in this course.

• Course purpose: Sociology courses are good for art students to think more actively about the world around you and the implications of the content and concepts your put into your own creative work. Understanding the impact of society on individuals and individuals on society can have a major impact on how an artist learns and appreciates the work of others and how they design their own work to accomplish their own goals and messages.
