Applied Business (AAS-T) Course Map

Created by Pierce faculty, this map outlines the initial coursework for this career field. It provides you a clear path to complete your degree by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career.  The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets degree requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time.  While this map is a great guide to courses required to complete the Associate of Applied Science - Transfer Applied Business, you are responsible for fulfilling all degree requirements.  Questions? 1. College Success


  • Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

2. English Composition I


  • Course purpose: Clear and strategic communication with others is a central feature of all careers connected to Business. The skills learned in ENGL 101 are foundational for later coursework and beyond.

3. Professional Development


  • Course purpose: Professional Development sets the stage for workplace success by providing career success strategies and tools. Move from “I can’t…” or “I think I can…” to “I can!” Dig deep in to who you are in terms of strengths and personal qualities/characteristics.

Use your Success Network! In your first quarter, meet with your advisor to revisit your career and transfer path, make adjustments to your goals as needed, and plan for your next steps.

Attend a transfer fair and choose a transfer institution if you plan to transfer, so that you take the correct prerequisites. 

4. Introduction to Business


  • Course purpose: Business is large, complex, and fascinating subject matter. To help prepare you for specific business courses, this course offers an overview of the globalized nature of today’s business and its major functions – operations, marketing, and finance.

5. Introduction to Statistics


  • Course purpose: Today’s business world relies on data to make sound business decisions. Introduction to Statistics will orient you to the art and science of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. By the end of the course, you will see how data can be used in powerful ways.

6. Technological Skill Set


Choose one group.

Group A


  • Course purpose: Required technological skill sets in the world of work include word-processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and cloud storage at a minimum. And technology is continually changing. We need to know how to work in and problem-solve with technology.

Choose one group.

Group A


  • Course purpose: To be a knowledgeable business professional, it is important for you to understand various factors that can affect business decisions. This course will open your eyes to what actually influences how businesses behave.

Group B


  • Course purpose: Fundamentally, microeconomics is the study of how individuals, organizations, and markets make choices. By learning microeconomics, you become a more knowledgeable and valuable business professional to organizations. If you decide to run your own business, you are better positioned to make informed business decisions.

10. Accounting Course Recommendation


Choose one group.

Group A


  • Course purpose: Basic knowledge of accounting is critical for all aspects of business as financial misunderstanding is one of the leading causes of business failure. This course explores the fundamental theories and concepts of accounting.

Group B


Choose this group if you took the Group B option for Economics.

  • Course purpose: Business Law introduces you to the laws relating to the operation of businesses from the perspectives of owners, managers, employees, customers and suppliers.

12. Principles of Marketing


  • Course purpose: Marketing is foundational across all aspects of business. You will learn about the business activities concerned with the flow of goods and services from producers to consumers from a marketing perspective.

13. Principles of Management


  • Course purpose: A successful business professional is able to effectively address management problems. Through this course you will learn how to apply the principles and practices of management in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. 

14. Project Management


  • Course purpose: Good project management skills saves a company time, money, and resources. In this course you will learn about the Initiate and Plan Process Groups tools and techniques to build a project plan. BUS 260 is part one of a two-part series. BUS 261 is the second course in this series.

15. Human Resource Management

  • Course purpose: Social media is how businesses are connecting with consumers. As a business professional you need basic understanding of how social media can impact brand recognition, increase traffic to company websites, and reach specific audiences. 

Option D - Retail Management/Fashion Merchandising


  • Course purpose: This course is a survey of the fashion industry from early development to present. You will analyze the interrelationships of the many different industries involved in the design, production, and distribution of all types of apparel and accessories.

Option A - Human Resource Management


  • Course purpose: Explores current human resource issues including local, state, and federal labor laws; effective recruitment and selection techniques using behaviorally-anchored structured interview format; training and development strategies using competency-based individual development plans; 360-degree performance review; and how to write employee policy manuals and job descriptions.

Option B - Project Management


  • Course purpose: Good project management skills saves a company time, money, and resources. In BUS 261 you will learn about the Execute, Monitor/Control, and Close Process Groups tools and techniques to build a project plan. BUS 261 is part two of a two-part series. BUS 260 is the first course in this series.

Option C - Entrepreneurship


Option D - Marketing


  • Course purpose: This course examines how organizations use online marketing strategies including websites, media sharing, social media networking, search engine optimization, and online advertising to market goods and services.
