Digital Design (AAS) Course Map

Created by Pierce faculty, this map outlines the initial coursework for this career field. It provides you a clear path to complete your degree by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career. The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets degree requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time. 4. English Composition I

  • Course purpose: Knowing how to communicate with and create content for clients, employers and businesses in a clear, concise and professional manor is a requirement in the field of graphic and media design.

5. Intro to Graphic Design and Rich Media

6. Layout Design and Publishing

  • Course purpose: This is the second of two introductory courses for the Digital Design program. This is the one course that teaches traditional page layout design and desktop publishing using Adobe InDesign.

7. Public Speaking

  • Course purpose: Graphic and media artists almost always work with clients. Presentations to small and large groups of clients are part of this field.

8. Graphic Design

  • Course purpose: This class covers beginning and advanced graphic design techniques using Adobe Illustrator, one of the main tools of a graphic and media designer.

9. Fundamentals of 3D Modeling and Animation

  • Course purpose: This is the first media design class in the program. It teaches the creation of 3D models and how to texture, light and animate them. From Game Design to Graphic Design, 3D modelers, texture artists and animators are always an in-demand field.

12. Fundamentals of Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop

13. Fundamentals of Video Production

  • Course purpose: This is the second media design class in the program. It covers all angles of video production form script writing to camera composition to post production editing and enhancement. It’s also one of those skills that will set you apart in a crowd of graphic designers.

If you did not attend Summer quarter and do not have the prerequisites completed for the DDSGN 210 class, you will need to meet with an advisor for options and get permission.

14. Web Design and CSS

  • Course purpose: Web design has become a required skill for every graphic designer. This along with page layout, illustration and image editing make up the four basics every graphic designer needs in their skill set.

15. Fundamentals of Motion Graphics and Interactive Media

  • Course purpose: Motion Graphic Artists have been an in-demand field for years now including 2D and 3D animations using photography and illustrated elements. This class also covers an introduction in creating interactive user experiences and user interfaces (called UX/UI) another highly in-demand field.

18. Integrated Digital Design I

  • Course purpose: The last techniques course in the Digital Design program, this class focuses on integrating multiple tool and techniques in each project, a prime example of what the job market expects from graphic and media artists.

Make sure to meet with your advisor if you have any course substitutions that need to be submitted to the evaluations office.

19. Integrated Digital Design II

  • Course purpose: This is the capstone project of the Digital Design program. This course has you creating three portfolios: An Animated (Demo) Reel, a traditional print portfolio and an online web portfolio.

20. Supervised Internship

  • Course purpose: The internship component of the Digital Design degree is for you to get a practical application of skills they learned. It is a 250-hour commitment that is designed to give you  work experience in the field of graphic and media design.

*If  ART 111 was completed at sequence #3, replace ART 111 for ART 101 in the 18, 19, and 21 groupings B, C, and E.
