  • Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

2. Business English I


  • BTECA 115 Business English I (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: This course will help you build the skills needed to prepare grammatically correct business documents. You will develop skills in editing documents for grammatical correctness, and creating coherent, well-organized sentences and paragraphs.

3. Introduction to the Medical Office


  • BTECM 149 Introduction to the Medical Office (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: You will be introduced to topics that occur in a Medical Office setting: history of healthcare system, overview of types of healthcare facilities, roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals, importance of team work and process improvement, as well as strategies for exploring the job market.

  • BTECA 116 Business English II (3 credits)
  • Course purpose: This course provides further study and practice with the writing process to create effective business memoranda, letters, and short reports. You will continue to build a strong business vocabulary and fluency with punctuation and rules. 

7. Medical Terminology


Choose one course each quarter until sequence is finished.

  • BTECM 150 Medical Terminology I (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: You will be introduced to word forms, prefixes, suffixes, and root words. You will analyze medical terms through the knowledge of the Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes ,as well as practice pronunciation and spelling of medical terms. 

  • BTECM 151 Medical Terminology II (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: You will continue to learn the rest of the body systems practicing all the same skills as found  in BTECM 150.

8. Professional Development


  • MNGT 186 Professional Development (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: You will conduct research on a career option, construct competitive career application and expand personal networks to enhance career options. In addition, you will develop a portfolio to demonstrate skill sets to perspective employers.

11. Medical Forms and Referral Management


  • BTECM 250 Medical Forms and Referral Management (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: You will be introduced to a variety of medical forms used in industry: CMS-1500, UB-92, referrals, and referral requests. Students gain understanding of documentation guidelines and completion of medical claim forms for Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, Worker’s Compensation, and Labor and Industries.

12. Electronic Health Records


  • BTECM 257 Electronic Health Records (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: You will complete common work tasks and practice data entry while creating a variety of electronic medical records (EMRs) in both inpatient and outpatient settings using training software. You will gain understanding on existing and evolving government driven standards and regulations as they apply to the healthcare environment.

  • BUS 240 Human Relations in the Workplace (5 credits)
  • Course purpose: You will be able to distinguish personality styles, learning styles, conflict resolution strategies, and communication styles in order to develop the ability to work with myriad different personalities in the workplace.
