KINS 155 Anatomy & Physiology Health/Fitness Professionals (5 credits)
Course Description A course providing an introduction to anatomy and physiology (structures and functions) of the human body, basic chemistry and the roles of individual organs, specific body systems and the relationship to exercise physiology. A 2.0 in this course is required.
Course Content A. Anatomical terminology, physiology, and biomechanics
B. Structural organization of the human body
C. Concepts of energy and matter
D. Composition of matter: elements, atomic structure, molecules, and compounds
E. Chemical bonds and chemical reactions
F. Biochemistry
G. Anatomy and physiology of cells and body tissues
H. Functions of human body systems at rest and during exercise
I. Anatomical and physiological developmental features of the Nervous, Muscular, Skeletal, Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Endocrine Systems
J. Muscle nomenclature, roles, and neuromuscular concepts
K. Skeletal Muscle Theory
L. Homeostatic Imbalances
M. Ethics and Professionalism
N. Safe use of laboratory equipment
O. Library and database research skills
Student Outcomes
- Articulate the basis for all chemical reactions as they underlie body processes through recognition, differentiation, and description of the basics of chemistry and biochemistry.
- Articulate the function and structural differences of cells and tissues, and their respective developemental aspects.
- Describe basic neural control mechanisms for human movement.
- Describe the structures and functions of the major body systems and their and their responses to exercise using anatomical terminology.
- Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and professional behavior related to the integrity of others during individual and cooperative activities.
- Analyze sources relevant to topics being investigated and critically evaluate scientific information to help make decisions with respect to health.
- Demonstrate proficiency in technique, safety and protocol for use of various laboratory equipment (microscope, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, skin-fold calipers, BodPod, goniometer and gulick tape measure).
Degree Outcomes Information Competency: Graduates will be able to seek, find, evaluate, and use information and employ information technology to engage in lifelong learning.
Program Outcome: Identify and conduct oneself as a member of the health and fitness profession by knowing and using ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to health and fitness practices as detailed by the ACSM.
