Course Description Cellular biology explores the structures and functions of living cells, with special emphasis placed on processes of metabolism, genetics, differentiation and microevolution. This course is intended for science majors. Lab included.
Course Content A. Basic chemistry principles as applied to cell structure and function
B. Evolution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
C. Cellular structure and physiology, including organic macromolecules (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids), membranes and organelles
D. Mechanisms of transport across cellular membranes
E. Protein synthesis process and regulation
F. Effects of mutations on protein structure
G. Cell differentiation by regulated gene expression
H. Cellular metabolic processes of cellular respiration, fermentation and photosynthesis
I. Cellular reproduction mechanisms, including mitosis, meiosis and binary fission
J. Virus replication processes and relationships with cells
K. Laboratory experimental design and implementation using current biotechnologies
L. Primary research article analysis
M. Cultural impacts of cellular biology
