Course Description
This course develops basic music literacy and analysis, and aural skills including: key and time signatures, intervals, triad construction, counterpoint and voice leading. Concurrent enrollment in MUSC 181 is strongly recommended.

Course Content
A. Components of music literacy (e.g. pitch names, rhythmic note-values, intervals, triads, key signatures and time signatures)
B. Basic elements of musical ideas (e.g. pitch, rhythm, intervals, scales and triads) 


C. Harmonic progressions analysis using Roman Numeral Analysis with basic figured bass symbols. 
D. Pitch and Notation  




Pitch on the staff and keyboard  






Accidentals  




E. Scales and Keys  




Major and minor scales, including scale degree names  






Circle of fifths  






Parallel and relative keys  




F. Intervals and Chords  




Intervals  






Simple chords and progressions  






Chord Inversions
