MUSC& 142 Music Theory II (5 credits)

Prerequisite MUSC& 141 with at least a 1.5 grade or equivalent or instructor permission.

Course Description
This course follows Music Theory I in sequence and includes triads, chord progressions, figured bass, four-part writing, melodic construction, and aural skills. Concurrent enrollment in MUSC 182 or the is strongly recommended.

Course Content
A. Components of musical phrase (e.g. melodic structures, harmonic progressions and function, and cadences) 


B. Elements of musical ideas (e.g. intervals, triads, chord progressions and scales) 


C. Cadences and Harmonic Structure  




Authentic cadences  






Plagal cadences  






Predominant and dominant functioning chords  




D. Melodic and Harmonic Development  




Melodic line, including phrases, periods, and repetition  






Non-harmonic tones (non-chord tones)  




E. Chord Structures and Voicings  




Triad inversions  






Chord voicings and inversions  






Roman numeral analysis with figured bass symbols  




F. Rhythm Dictation and Transpositions  




Rhythmic transcription  






Transposing instruments  




G. Ear-Training and Aural Skills  




Basic ear-training skills, including recognition of intervals, scales, chords, and melodic/rhythmic dictation of rhythmic and melodic lines from aural examples.

  1. Apply proper voice leading principles within a four-voice musical texture.
