MUSC& 241 Music Theory IV (5 credits)

Prerequisite MUSC& 143 with at least a 1.5 grade or equivalent or instructor permission.
Course Description This course follows Music Theory III in sequence and includes advanced study of harmony, including chromatic harmony, formal analysis and aural skills. Piano skills equal to or above the intermediate level (MUSC 182) are highly recommended.
Course Content A. Elements of complex harmonic progressions (e.g. various modulation techniques, functional chromaticism)
B. Modulation and Harmonic Progressions
Modulation techniques
Modulations using diminished chords
C. Diminished triads and seventh chords with secondary leading tone functions
D. Diatonic seventh chords
E. Musical Form
Binary, ternary and rondo forms
F. Aural training

Student Outcomes
- Analyze complex harmonic progressions.
- Compose complex harmonic progressions.
- Identify small scale musical forms including idiomatic characteristics of instrumental music
- Identify basic large musical forms, including composite forms.
- Aurally identify intermediate musical ideas including seventh chords, less common chord progressions
- Dictate increasingly complex rhythmic and melodic lines from aural examples, including two-part examples.
- Sight sing melodies that include larger leaps with complex rhythms.
