PE 175 Gi Jiu Jitsu for Fitness (2.0 credits)



Course Description
An introduction to Jiu Jitsu which is a grappling martial art predominantly focused on ground fighting. Students can expect to actively participate with one another in grappling skills.

Course Content
A. Medical clearance for exercise B. Benefits of physical fitness  C. Health-related Components of fitness D. Behavior modification and habit building  E. Goal-setting and evaluation   F. Self-awareness; self-worth; confidence  G. Elements of  current and historical jiu jitsu grappling:  grips, posture, techniques, positions, side control, back control, key submissions  H.  Safety, rules and strategies H.  Balance and Neuromotor control I.  Practical self-defense with self-control J.  Stress management K.  Teammwork

Student Outcomes
1.  Identify medical clearance for safe participation in exercise and the benefits of participation in gi jui jitsu fitness training.  

2.  Identify the benefits of exercise to improve one’s health and wellness through the development of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound) goals for the purpose of self-analysis, self-discovery, and self-reflection.

3.  Students will demonstrate fundamentals of grappling while exploring both historical and current practices. 

4.  Demonstrate jiu jitsue etiquette, conduct, and sportsmanship through self-awareness, control and humility in order to contribute to a positive and respectful environment.
