VT 230 Anesthesiology (4 credits)
Prerequisite Enrollment in the Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology.
Course Description Small animal anesthesia techniques focusing on agents, administration, and management of the anesthetized patient.
Course Content A. Pre-anesthetic health status evaluation and preparation
B. Injectable and inhalent anesthetic agents and proper monitoring
C. Anesthetic emergencies
D. Surgical planes of anesthesia
E. Adverse effects of injectable and inhalant anesthetics
F. Risks of occupational exposure to inhalant anesthetics.
G. Maintenance and routine care of anesthetic equipment.
Student Outcomes
- Assess the health status and prepare the animal patient prior to anesthesia
- Anesthetize and maintain surgical planes of anesthesia using injectable and inhalant anesthetic agents
- Identify adverse effects of anesthetic agents in order to respond to medical emergencies
- Demonstrate maintenance techniques for anesthetic equipment.
