DHYG 407 Restorative Dentistry III (1.5 credits)



Course Description
Continued development of advanced techniques in the placement, carving and polishing of dental amalgam restorations and composite restorations on the adult dentition. Continued exploration of dental restorative theories related to advanced techniques and procedures of modern dental materials. A basic overview of endodontics and vitality testing included as part of assessing a patient’s pain complaint.

Course Content
Ergonomics in restorative dentistry as assistant and operatory
Dental matricies and wedging systems associated with composite restorations
Dental matricies and wedging systems associated with amalgam restorations
Dental liners and base materials
Advanced placement and finishing of Class I, II, III and V composite restorations on the permanent and primary dentitions
Advanced placement and finishing of Class I, II, III and V amalgam restorations on the permanent and primary dentitions
Placement and finishing of Class IV restorations using a celluloid form or free hand method 
Principles and techniques for amalgam polishing
History and theories of dental bonding agents
Properties and manipulation of composite materials
Restorative communication skills
Restorative nomenclature, terminology, and vocabulary
Communication of restorative procedures to patient
Principles of occlusion and proximal relationships as related to placement and finishing of restorations
Overhang removal systems (hand instrument, mechanical finishing/polishing instrument, high speed hand pieces)
Restorative treatment sequencing and planning using and considering all variables and restorative procedures.  
Advanced placement techniques (composite veneers, diastema closure, Class IV composite, etc.)
Assessment of restorative application/lab outcomes using the current licensing examination standards and best practices. 
History and theories of various dental bonding agents used under composite and amalgam restorations. 
Includes continuation of content and progressive outcomes from DHYG 277, 287, 317, and 327.

Student Outcomes
  1. Apply dental overhang removal techniques.
  2. Determine appropriate composite shade selection and layering techniques.   
  3. Create a restorative treatment planning with proper sequencing.
  4. Apply principles of safety, ergonomics, and infection control while performing dental restorative techniques as an operator.
  5. Demonstrate alternate techniques in the placement of matrix and wedge application on a typodont. 
  6. Assess placement and finishing of advanced amalgam and composite restorations (including Class IV, diastema closure) on the permanent and primary typodont dentitions.
