DHYG 284 Biological Structures II: Head and Neck Anatomy (2 credits)



Course Description
This is the second in a series of three courses. Comprehensive study of human head and neck anatomy with an in-depth focus on the form, function, and relationships of structures of the head, neck, and orofacial complex. Units of study include surface anatomy, skeletal system (osteology), muscular system, vascular system, nervous systems, lymphatic system, and glandular system of the head and neck. A working knowledge of these structures is required to develop safe foundational skills and for clinical practice as a dental hygienist.

Course Content
· Comprehensive study with an in-depth focus on the form, function, and relationships of structures of the head, neck, and orofacial complex.
· Anatomical considerations and clinical applications for patient assessment, treatment, monitoring, and clinical documentation by dental hygiene professionals.
·Anatomical facts, concepts, and essential terminology related to normal and abnormal anatomical variations.
·Identification and organization of the anatomical structures and systems of the head, neck, and orofacial complex.

Student Outcomes
 

  1. Apply anatomical facts, terminology, and concepts related to normal and abnormal anatomical variations of human head and neck anatomy, systems, and the orofacial complex in order to prepare for other courses in the dental hygiene curriculum to include: Fundamentals of Dental Hygiene, Dental Radiology, Oral Pathology, Periodontology, Local Anesthesia and Restorative Dentistry.
  2. Differentiate between features of the surface anatomy and submucosal anatomy related to clinical applications.
  3. Communicate essential terminology associated with anatomical facts and concepts of human head and neck anatomy, systems, and the orofacial complex to dental and healthcare professionals, and patients.
  4. Integrate anatomical facts and concepts of head and neck anatomy and the orofacial complex into dental hygiene clinical practice.
