Course Description
An introduction to the foundations of Mandarin Chinese. The course is designed to promote the ability to speak, read and write basic Mandarin Chinese.

Pronunciation of Chinese syllables, words, phrases, and sentences
Romanization system (Pinyin)
Greetings and polite inquiries
Daily life and activities
Counting
Dates and clock time
Statements and questions
Postpositions
Standard word order
Subordination of nominals
50 basic Chinese characters
Festivals and holidays

Student Outcomes
 

  1. Demonstrate Chinese comprehension through listening and reading.
  2. Reflect upon Chinese cultural language contexts in relation to one’s own language contexts and cultural contexts. 
  3. Produce basic sentences and paragraphs with Chinese characters.  
  4. Respond in Chinese to simple interpersonal situations observed in daily life.
