VT 103 Veterinary Communications (2 credits)
Prerequisite Enrollment in the Veterinary Technology Program
Course Description Students will learn verbal and nonverbal communication skills essential for veterinary medicine. The course will focus on team dynamics, client and colleague interactions, and the communication needed in veterinary client-patient relationships to facilitate appropriate patient care.
Course Content A. Basic verbal and nonverbal communication skills
B. Active listening and empathetic communications related to the veterinary experience
C. Cultural and generational differences in clientele and colleagues
D. Techniques for navigating difficult conversations about patient care
E. Discussing uncomfortable topics including financial estimates and monetary restrictions to patient care
F. Ethical dilemmas faced in veterinary practice and responsible conversations
G. Simulated clinical and client communication exercises including patient exams, care plans, and aftercare instructions
Student Outcomes
- Practice clinical communications, including initial patient exams and questions, home care discussions, and financial updates
- Communicate medical information in terms nonmedical clients will understand to facilitate appropriate patient care
- Practice communicating across several platforms, including telephone calls, email, text messages, and in-person to support the veterinary client-patient relationship.
Degree Outcomes Effective Communication: Graduates will be able to craft and exchange ideas and information in a variety of situations, in response to audience, context, purpose, and motivation.
