VT 114 Dentistry for Veterinary Technicians (2 credits)



Prerequisite Enrollment in the Veterinary Technology Program

Course Description
Overview of veterinary dentistry with emphasis placed on anatomy and pathophysiology, selection and maintenance of dental instruments, radiography, and proper performance of dental prophylaxis.

Course Content
A.  Anatomy, Pathophysiology, and Development of the Tooth and Associated Oral Structures
B. Species and Breed Differences in Oral Care and Anatomy
C. Use and Maintenance of Power and Hand Instruments, Oral Therapeutics
D. Charting and Evaluation of the Oral Cavity and Dental Structures, Recognizing General Oral and Dental Pathology, and Dental Terminology
E. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), ergonomics, and safety during dental treatments
F. Radiographic Techniques and Safety 
G. Cleaning and Treatment of the Normal and Abnormal Tooth
H. Endodontic and Exodontic Nursing 
I. Oral Care Client Education

Student Outcomes
1. Describe normal tooth development and identify dental abnormalities
2. Perform a complete dental prophylaxis on models
3. Safely use and maintain dental equipment
