VT 251 Pharmacology for Veterinary Technicians (3 credits)
Prerequisite Enrollment in the Veterinary Technology Program
Course Description Introduction to the pharmacology of commonly used drugs in veterinary medicine. The indications, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and adverse effects of drugs are discussed.
Course Content A. Commonly used drugs in veterinary medicine
B. Principles of pharmacokinetics
C. Proper handling of veterinary drugs to include controlled substances
D. Adverse effects of commonly used veterinary drugs
Student Outcomes 1. Discuss veterinary drug categories, their basic pharmacokinetic process, and their mechanism of action.
2. Demonstrate proper handling, packaging, and disposal of veterinary drugs to include controlled substances.
3. Identify drug reactions and possible drug incompatibilities caused by commonly used veterinary drugs.
