Course Description
This course explores the fundamental elements of music—melody, harmony, rhythm, pitch, texture, timbre, form, and dynamics—while examining each element’s role in shaping musical expression across history. Students will study a broad cross-section of historical periods, analyze significant works by composers, and explore the relationship between music and cultural movements. Through lectures, discussions, listening experiences, and concert attendance, students will develop the skills to identify musical styles, critically evaluate performances, and reflect on music’s role in society and their own lives.

Student Outcomes
1. Aurally identify fundamental elements of music in a variety of musical works.

2. Identify key characteristics of major historical periods of music.

3. Apply basic music terminology to describe and analyze compositions and performances.

4. Differentiate between musical genres, styles, and forms, and explain their relationship to cultural and historical contexts.

5. Evaluate live and recorded performances, reflecting on elements of style, form, and expression.

6. Explore the connections between music and societal movements, including diverse cultural and global perspectives.

7. Reflect on personal biases and preferences to broaden appreciation and understanding of music across styles and cultures.
