DHYG 327 Restorative Dentistry II (1.5 credits)
Course Description
The third in the series furthering skills in restorative dentistry. Focused on advanced placement and finishing of complex dental amalgam and composite restorations on both the adult and primary dentitions.

Strategies to maintain a clear operating field Infection control in restorative dentistry Rubber dams Rubber dam placement Alternate isolation techniques and devices Ergonomics in restorative dentistry as assistant and operatory Retraction cord and hemostatic agents Provisional (temporary) restorations Build-up restorations Pulpal pathology and vitality testing Dental matricies and wedging systems associated with composite restorations Dental matricies and wedging systems associated with amalgam restorations Dental liners and base materials Placement and finishing of Class I, II, III and V composite restorations on the permanent and primary dentitions Placement and finishing of Class I, II, III and V amalgam restorations on the permanent and primary dentitions Principles and techniques for amalgam polishing History of dental composite materials Properties and manipulation of composite materials History of dental amalgam materials Properties and principles of dental amalgam materials Safe management of dental mercury Evidence-based science on safety of mercury in dental amalgam Dental contamination Restorative communication skills Restorative nomenclature, terminology, and vocabulary Communication of restorative procedures to patient Principles of occlusion and proximal relationships as related to placement and finishing of restorations Final crown impressions (Continuing Education Certificate: Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary (EFDA)) WA RCW WAC Includes continuation of content and progressive outcomes from DHYG 277, 287, and 317.
Student Outcomes
- Apply principles of safety, ergonomics, and infection control while performing dental restorative techniques as an operator.
- Demonstrate a functional provisional restoration on a typodont.
- Select advanced and alternative isolation techniques (including retraction cord) for placement and finishing of amalgam and composite restorations on the permanent and primary typodont dentitions.
- Demonstrate placement and finishing of advanced amalgam and composite restorations on the permanent and primary typodont dentitions.
- Appraise occlusion in restorative dentistry on a typodont.
- Demonstrate the procedure for final impressions on a typodont.
