2. Business English I
- BTECA 115 Business English I (5 credits)
Course purpose: This course will help you build the skills needed to prepare grammatically correct business documents. You will develop skills in editing documents for grammatical correctness, and creating coherent, well-organized sentences and paragraphs.
3. PC Operating System/Microsoft Word

4. Business English Support
You will take 2 credits of a support class offering extra instruction to meet outcomes for BTECA 115.
5. ABE Academic Support
ABE 099 is a support class to help with computer and keyboarding instruction, navigating Canvas, and overall college experience. In addition, exposure to some basic math in order to prepare you for BTECA 117.
6. College Success
- COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)
Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond. Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.

9. Business English II
- BTECA 116 Business English II (3 credits)
Course purpose: Further study and practice with the writing process to create effective business memoranda, letters, and short reports. You will continue to build a stong business vocabulary and fluency with punctuation and rules. Job applicants must be able to write coherent messages with correct grammar for internal and external communication.
10. Computer Application Lab
A total of 13 Computer Application Lab credits will be required in order to meet the requirements of this degree. These courses can be taken during steps 10 and steps 14 of the map.
11. ABE Academic Support
ABE 099 is a support class to help with computer, keyboarding, and Business English II, navigating Canvas and the overall college experience. In addition, continued exposure to some basic math in order to prepare you for BTECA 117.
12. Business Mathematics
- BTECA 117 Business Mathematics (5 credits)
Course purpose: Students practice skills in banking such as keeping a checkbook and balancing it. Solving for equations for the unknown. Practicing percent and fractions. Understanding discounts, markups, and markdowns. Insight into perishables, simple interest promissory notes, discount notes, and the discount process, compound interest and present value. Installment buying and revolving credit, basic statistics, metric supplement depreciation, inventory, and overhead.
Industry often requires basic bookkeeping and collection of funds from invoices and calculation of purchase orders. Math knowledge is necessary to write correct formulas in often used Excel spreadsheets for budgeting and other financial purposes.
13. Introduction to the Medical Office
- BTECM 149 Introduction to the Medical Office (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will be introduced to topics that occur in a Medical Office setting. In this course you will learn about the history of healthcare systems, overview of types of healthcare facilities, roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals, importance of teak work and process improvement, as well as strategies for exploring the job market.
14. Computer Application Lab
A total of 13 Computer Application Lab credits will be required in order to meet the requirements of this degree. These courses can be taken during steps 10 and steps 14 of the map.
15. Business Math Support
You will take 2 credits in a support class offering extra instruction to meet outcomes of BTECA 117.
16. Medical Terminology I
- BTECM 150 Medical Terminology I (5 credits)
Course purpose: You are introduced to word forms, pre-fixes, suffixes, and root words. You will analyze medical terms through the knowledge of the Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. You will practice pronunciation and spelling of medical terms. You will learn how to utilize medical dictionary and other references, as well as the formation of nouns, adjectives, and plurals of medical words. Knowledge of medical terminiology is beneficial to the medical office administrative assistant when communicating with patients and medical clinicians. This course is broken into two 5-credit courses that cover all of the systems of the body. One book will be used for both BTECM 150 and BTECM 151.

Course purpose: You should be able to demonstrate interpersonal communication skills with a diverse population internally and externally with clients, customers, and co-workers with a major focus on clients and customers. - MNGT 182 Creative Sales and Customer Relationship Management (5 credits)
Course purpose: In the workplace today, we need to know how to meet/exceed internal and external customer expectations and engage in the selling process. This course gives you the tools for successful workplace customer engagement leading to customer loyalty. It also trains the selling process which is used to sell products, services, and ideas.
18. Microsoft Outlook
- BTECA 180 Microsoft Outlook (3 credits)
Course purpose: You will demonstrate skills in each tool utilized in Outlook: Calendar, email, scheduling, tasks, etc. which most offices are using these days.
19. Human Biology: Anatomy & Physiology
- BIOL& 170 Human Biology: Anatomy & Physiology (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will gain a comprehensive study of the human body, its structure and its function. A non-lab course appropriate for non-science majors. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology is beneficial to the medical office administrative assistant when communicating with patients and medical clinicians.

22. Medical Claims and Insurance Management
- BTECM 250 Medical Claims and Insurance Management (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will be introduced to a variety of medical forms used in industry: CMS-1500, UB-92, referrals, and referral requests. Students gain understanding of documentation guidelines and completion of medical claim forms for Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, Worker’s Compensation, and Labor and Industries.
23. Cooperative Work Experience I
- BTECA 245 Cooperative Work Experience I (3 credits)
Course purpose: You will gain practice in a workplace setting, while networking, establishing work experience for their resume, and hopefully ultimately gaining a job, which is what most students in the professional technical field want.

After completing BTECA 245, you have completed the Administrative Office Assistant Certificate.
24. Human Relations in the Workplace
- BUS 240 Human Relations in the Workplace (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will be able to distinguish personality styles, learning styles, conflict resolution strategies, and communication styles in order to develop the ability to work with myriad different personalities in the workplace.
25. Business Communications
- BTECA 250 Business Communications (5 credits)
Course purpose: This course prepares you with advanced writing skills necessary for success in an office. In addition, you will synthesize and apply content previously acquired while learning how to write messages that build goodwill and positive relationships with clients and co-workers and writing for a specific purpose and audience.
