1. College Success

• COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)

• Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

• Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

2. Communications Course Recommendation

• CMST& 101 Introduction to Communications (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Being able to understand and respond to both verbal and nonverbal cues are key skills working with clients and co-workers.

• CMST& 220 Fundamentals of Public Speaking (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Being able to communicate your work accurately and effectively ensure the right financial decisions are being made by your company.

3. Math Course Recommendation

Choose one

• MATH 147 Business Precalculus (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This course provides you with experience in working with algebraic solving techniques, working with exponents and the mathematics of finance. These are tools that assist with data analysis in accounting.

• MATH& 107 Math in Society (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This course applies math to a variety of areas. Topics will include graphical- and formula-derived solutions, statistics, applied problems, and communicationg solutions. Additional topics may also include management science, statistics, social choice, patterns, and financial applications.

• Note: The math course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following, the transfer institution/degree that you select, and your math placement guidance. Your advisor will assist you in selecting the relevant 5 or 7 credit course(s) based upon co-requisite options.

4. Principles of Accounting I, II, and III

• Course purpose: These courses provide the foundational knowledge expected of any accounting/bookkeeping employee.

5. English Course Recommendation

• ENGL& 101 English Composition I (5 credits)

• Course purpose: In this field you must be able to clearly correspond with clients and the government to ensure.

• Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course. 

6. Business Law

• BUS& 201 Business Law (5 credits)

• Course purpose: In this field you must be aware of the government regulations that define your work.

Credit for courses listed after these will not count toward a Business DTA, so if you are planning on work transferring to a 4-year university, this is the right time to switch paths.

7. Human Relations in the Workplace

• BUS 240 Human Relations in the Workplace (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Hone your skills at working in a business setting.

8. Microsoft Office Skills

• Course purpose: MS Office Software is used throughout the business and accounting world. Knowledge of this program is important to your success as an employee.

  These courses can be taken at any point in your pathway. They are very flexible in their attendance requirements, which you have scheduling constraints and credits are needed for funding purposes.

9. Leading Teams through Innovation and Change

• MNGT 294 Leading Teams Through Innovation and Change (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Hone your skills at leading and supervising a team.

10. QuickBooks

• Course purpose: This is the first of two courses that offer experience with frequently used bookkeeping software.

11. Ten-Key Mastery

• BTECA 136 Ten-Key Mastery (1 credit)

• Course purpose: Ten-key experience is an important skill in accounting, whether using a desktop calculator or computer keyboard.

12. Spreadsheet Applications

• CIS 136 Spreadsheet Applications (5 credits)

• Course purpose: MS Excel is used throughout the business and accounting world. Knowledge of this program is important to your success as an employee.

13. Federal Income Tax Preparation

• ACCT 179 Federal Income Tax Preparation (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Both individual and corporate taxation principles are studied in this course.

14. Introduction to Computer Information Systems

Choose one

• CIS 121 Introduction to Computer Information Systems (5 credits)

• Course purpose: An understanding of computer technology, vocabulary and information processing are developed here.

• CIS 130 Productivity Software (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Learn the most popular software applications used for word processing, spreadsheet, database management, presentation, and note taking purposes using various local and cloud-based storage. Recommended for BAS - Applied Business Management students.

• Course purpose: This is the second of two courses that offer experience with frequently used bookkeeping software.

16. Payroll and Business Taxes

• ACCT 275 Payroll and Business Taxes (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Knowledge of payroll is a skill valued by many employers.

17. Nonprofit Management and Reporting

• Course purpose: Issues unique to the nonprofit sector are considered here.
