• Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

• Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

2. Intro to Construction Management

• Course purpose: You will be introduced to common construction management concepts and processes including industry terminology, business practices, estimating/bidding, scheduling, project management, field operations and career pathways.

3. Construction Drawings

• CONST 140 Construction Drawings: Printreading (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will be introduced to construction drawings with emphasis on reading, interpreting, and communicating the content of the documents.

• Course purpose: You will learn the technical aspects of construction systems, including the procedures and methods for masonry, steel, wood, and concrete construction. Recent trends in construction materials are also covered.

9. English Composition I

• ENGL& 101 English Composition I (5 credits)

• Course purpose: In this field you need to be able to communicate with all parties on a job site and need to be able to write clearly and concisely to ensure that projects completed on time and within scope and budget.

10. Estimating

• Course purpose: You will learn about construction estimating and bidding, including basic concepts, procedures, terminology, and pricing techniques.

11. Scheduling and Planning

• Course purpose: You will learn the principles of scheduling and planning to control and manage a construction project.

• Course purpose: The entire construction management industry is based on the ability to communicate. This course will allow you to develop the skill to analyze audiences and adjust message delivery based on audience feedback.

• CMST 105 Intercultural Communication (5 credits)

• Course purpose: As a construction management professional you will need to have great communication skills in order to make sure projects are completed on time, within budget, with quality and safety of all team members. A construction management professsional needs to build effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills across all cultures.

• Course purpose: You will learn construction industry standards for accident prevention, hazard identification, and compliance responsibility.These are emphasized in conjunction with an overview of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and other related federal and state legislative requirements.

19. Business Law

• Course purpose: In the construction management field you will write you own contracts, negotiate claims, dispute resolution with owners and subcontractors, and represent in bankruptcy court.

• Course purpose: Knowledge of partnerships, bonds, corporations, cash flow statements, and financial statement analysis is important in the construction field to ensure the project is completed on time and budget.

• Course purpose: As a construction management professional you need to have knowledge of supply and demand of products and the skills to  determine prices in a market economy in order to anticipate economic changes which could impact how you develop project estimates.

• ECON& 201 Microeconomics (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn about the allocation of resources and supply and demand, labor, capital markets and international trade.  This is  essential knowledge when developing estimates.

• BUS& 101 Introduction to Business (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn about marketing, management, economics, international commerce, and finance production. This knowledge is important to have in this career. For example you may find yourself monitoring the stock market to determine the optimal time to purchase supplies.

• ECON& 202 Macroeconomics (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Construction is an indicator of the economy doing well or not doing well. Having knowledge of the US economy will help you plan for employment opportunities and dips. Understanding of macroeconomics also aids in keeping business afloat by creating accurate 3-5 year projections for resources and projects.

• Course purpose: In this field you are expected to be able to clearly communicate design plans, estimates, and project progress.

• ENVS 155 Applied Environmental Methods (5 credits)

• Course purpose: In this field you need to have strong knowledge of how the buildings you create impact water quality, ecology, and bio-geography. In this course you will be learning about these elements conducting field work in regional parks and natural areas.

• PHYS& 110 Physics for Non-Science Majors (5 credits)

• Course purpose: We design and build buildings that defy gravity. It is important to know your limitations.
