• Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

• Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.

4. English Composition I

6. History of US II

• Course purpose: The US history sequence and the world history sequence are the foundational history courses.

7. Communication Course Recommendation

Choose one

• CMST 105 Intercultural Communication (5 credits)
• CMST& 220 Fundamentals of Public Speaking (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Both of these course are especially useful if you are training to be a teacher. For other careers it will also be useful for professional setting. Intercultural knowledge has additional benefits if you are planning to work with individuals from other cultures.

8. History of US III

• HIST& 158 History of US III (5 credits)

• Course purpose: The US history sequence and the world history sequence are the foundational history courses.

9. English Composition II

• ENGL& 102 Composition II: Argumentation and Research (5 credits)

• Course purpose: All professions involving history require the ability to impart historical knowledge in a clear and professional way, particularly in writing. This in class in particular you would develop the research skills that a professional with training in history would be expected to have.

10. Survey of Environmental Science

• ENVS& 100 Survey of Environmental Science (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Interactions with and protection of our environment is a key focus of contemporary historiography. This will also provide an engaging entry point to introduce you to the scientific method.

• Course purpose: The US history sequence and the world history sequence are foundational history courses.

• HIST& 127 World Civilizations II (5 credits)

• Course purpose: History of Latin America is a more specialized option, relevant if you have an interest in that particular region, or anticipate that you will be working with individuals from a Latin American background.

12. Philosophy Course Recommendation

Choose one

• PHIL& 101 Introduction to Philosophy (5 credits)
• PHIL& 115 Critical Thinking (5 credits)

• Course purpose: These are useful for critical thinking, familiarization with varieties of culture and the evolution of human thought. Intellectual history is an important aspect of historical inquiry. Between the two philosophy options, Introduction to Philosophy is recommended because it has more of an historical approach. Critical Thinking would be of more interest if you have an interest in the structure of formal logic and argumentation.

13. Physical Geography

• Course purpose: Geography is a critical element in the understanding of historical events.

• Course purpose: Historians draw connections between civilizations and cultures, compare and contrast civilizations and cultures and understand historical reasons for cultural differences.  This course will be particularly helpful if you have an interest in current events and would be especially useful for future teachers.

• INTS 107 Introduction to International Studies ( 5 credits)

• Course purpose: Relationships around the world are critical.  International Studies will help you with knowledge of current political events, particularly important in fields such as teacher or journalist.

• ANTH& 206 Cultural Anthropology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Anthropology would help you develop with an interest in cultures of the world. 

• PSYC& 100 General Psychology (5 credits)
• POLS& 101 Introduction Political Science (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This social science requirement will be useful if you are planning to enter a field requiring knowledge of current political events such as becoming a journalist or teacher.

• Course purpose: This course provides some of the key concepts for natural history, including the origins of our universe. Often world history courses will begin with the big bang.
