1. College Success

• COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)

• Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

• Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.

• Course purpose: This course provides foundational theories and general history of Theatre. This course would be appropriate if you have an interest in the study of film as an artistic practice.

• ENGL 214 Screenwriting 1 (5 credits)

• Course purpose: If you have an interest in film you have an opportunity in this course to apply what you know and create a screenplay. This would be an essential component for someone with an interest in writing for film. 

3. Drama Course Recommendation

• DRMA 171 Technical Film and Theatre II (5 credits)

• Course purpose: This course sequence provides practical application of theatre production and other elements within the discipline.

5. English Composition I

• Course purpose: Clear and strategic written communication with others is essential for all film careers. The skills learned in ENGL 101 are foundational for later coursework and beyond.

6. Survey of Anthropology

• Course purpose: This course offers an opportunity to expand your understanding of cultures and peoples outside of your own background. This also allows you to specialize and synthesize that information.

• Course purpose: This course provides foundational theories in human communication. Film is one mode of communication. This course covers elements of media literacy and consumption and has students interrogate their media choices, impacting how one understands and consumes film.

8. General Psychology

• PSYC& 100 General Psychology (5 credits)

• Course purpose: An understanding of film is best served by a fundamental understanding of human psychology. As many films are performances of how humans interact. Many topics and theories covered in this course are also applicable in acting courses.

9. Public Speaking

• CMST& 220 Fundamentals of Public Speaking (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Public speaking is a highly valued skill for most employers and is a requirement for graduation at most 4-year institutions. Being able to express oneself orally is critical for all students of film.

• Course purpose: Theatre practitioners must be able to understand and analyze literary theories and structures as part of the dramatic form. 

11. Survey of Biology

• Course purpose: Students in theatre need to develop skills in observation, testing, and analysis.

• Course purpose: Students with an interest in film should take courses that offer insight into the development of film and its content. This course focuses specifically on American film production, culture, history, and impact from the 1900’s to present day.

• HUM 215 World Cinema (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Students with an interest in film should take courses that offer insight into the development of film and its content. This course focuses on cinematic traditions and movements across the world.

• JOURN 125 The Documentary: A Social Force (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Students with an interest in film should take courses that offer insight into the development of film and its content. This course explores how non-fiction documentary film has moved us, amused us, manipulated us, and inspired us.

• Course purpose: This course helps develop your ability to communicate complex information in ways that are accurate and understandable. Statistics are frequently used in the discourse of many fields, including media. It is important that all students have a basic understanding of statistics.

• Course purpose: Because many theories in theatre are also based in Psychology this course will add to your understanding of human behavior.

17. Production Practicum

• DRMA 280 Production Practicum I - VI (1 to 3 credits)

• Course purpose: If you have an interest in theatre or film you should participate in the production process. These would be the same skills a film or theatre production crew would need to know and would give a sense of what a career in film would look like.
