1. College Success


  • Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

  • Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.

  • Course purpose: As an occupational safety and health professional, you will often find yourself writing reports, proposals, letters, emails, and presentations. ENGL& 101 will provide the foundational skills of developing these writing skills and transfers to 4-years institutions.

  • Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course.

5. Productivity Software


  • Course purpose: Microsoft office is a basic tool that is required by all OSH professionals in nearly all work environments to manage and communicate information and data.

6. Introduction to Statistics


  • Course purpose: OSH professionals need a strong foundation in mathematics so they can interpret quantitative data reported in reports and research papers, and to appropriately convey quantitative data in meetings and documents.

  • Note: The math course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following, the transfer institution/degree that you select, and your math placement guidance. Your advisor will assist you in selecting the relevant 5 or 7 credit course(s) based upon co-requisite options. 

7. Incident Investigation


  • Course purpose: This course provides an overview of the theory and purpose of incident investigation, and how to conduct an investigation. Being able to conduct an incident investigation is a key skill for an OSH professional.

10. Handling Hazardous Materials


  • Course purpose: OSH professionals must have a basic understanding of the characteristics of hazardous materials, the impacts of the related hazards, how to prevent or minimize exposure, and what protective measures to take to prevent exposures when handling or exposed to hazardous materials.

  • Course purpose: OSH professionals need a basic understanding of human behavior, as they are often asked to carry out activities that require people to make behavior changes.

13. Regulatory Environment


  • Course purpose: An OSH professional needs to have a basic knowledge of different government agencies that have some role in regulating worker health, safety and the environment. This course provides a basic overview of those agencies and what they regulate.

14. Training Techniques


  • Course purpose: As an OSH professional you are frequently required to develop training and present information on how to prevent injuries to employees within an organization. This course provides an overview in the steps necessary to plan, develop and deliver training.

15. Project Management I: Planning


  • Course purpose: Basic knowledge of project management skills and terminology are necessary for an OSH professional, particularly in the implementation of new programs, development of products, or for construction related projects.

  • Course purpose: OSH professionals need a strong background in industrial hygiene skills including sampling and monitor techniques, data collection, data interpretation and the limitations and challenges of sampling data.

  • Course purpose: OSH professionals must be aware of security issues within a work environment to control and limit public and employee access workplace hazards, as well as the role of a health and safety in relationship to workplace violence.

  • Course purpose: OSH professionals must be familiar with what different types of ergonomic hazards are, how they can cause injuries, and methods and techniques that can be used to prevent them.

  • Course purpose: The internship provides students an opportunity to observe how health and safety practices are applied in a real work setting and apply the OSH skills and technical knowledge they have learned in their OSH courses.
