It provides you a clear path to complete your certificate by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career. The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets certificate requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time.

1. College Success
- COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)
Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond. Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.
2. English Course Recommendation
Choose one:
- ENGL& 101 English Composition I (5 credits)
Course purpose: This course prepares you to develop and strengthen English language use skills, which position you to effectively communicate ideas in various written forms. (Required course for admission into the BAS in Applied Business Management.) - ENGL& 235 Technical Writing (5 credits)
Course purpose: This course helps you develop writing skills for professional settings including visual rhetoric and design. You will build advanced knowledge of genres conventions introduced in ENGL& 101. Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course.

- CIS 130 Productivity Software (5 credits)
Course purpose: Learn the most popular software applications used for word processing, spreadsheet, database management, presentation, and note taking purposes using various local and cloud-based storage. (Required course for admission into the BAS in Applied Business Management.)
5. Mathematics Course Recommendation
Choose one:
- BTECA 117 Business Mathematics (5 credits)
Course purpose: In this course, you will learn mathematical computations in banking, merchandising, inventory, depreciation and promissory notes. It also introduces you to simple statistics and the metric system. - MATH& 146 Introduction to Stats (5 credits)
Course purpose: This course teaches you how collect and interpret data, compute probabilities, and test theories using statistical methods in order to make informed decisions. (Required course for admission into the BAS in Applied Business Management.) Note: The math course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following, the transfer institution/degree that you select, and your math placement guidance. Your advisor will assist you in selecting the relevant 5 or 7 credit course(s) based upon co-requisite options.
6. Accounting Course Recommendation
Choose one:
- ACCT 101 Survey of Accounting (5 credits)
Course purpose: In this course, you will learn the language of business by understanding fundamentals of accounting. This course emphasizes applications of accounting information to various career programs such as Management and Computer Information Systems. - ACCT& 201 Principles of Accounting I (5 credits)
Course purpose: This is the first of a series of accounting courses required by most transferring institutions offering a bachelor’s degree in business administration. You will learn basic accounting concepts and procedures. Primary emphasis on the balance sheet and income statements in a single proprietorship. (Required course for admission into the BAS in Applied Business Management.) - ACCT 275 Payroll and Business Taxes (5 credits)
Course purpose: In this course, you will learn how to analyze expenses and legal requirements in order to maximize profits; explore best accounting practices to ensure customer and employment satisfaction; as well as comply with employment and tax laws to maintain legal and competitive stance.
7. Economics Course Recommendation
Choose one:
- ECON 110 Survey of Economics (5 credits)
Course purpose: An overview of both microeconomics and macroeconomics. Topics include (1) supply and demand; production; market structures; determination of prices in a market economy; and income distribution; (2) organization and operation of the US economy including unemployment, inflation, and GDP issues; fiscal and monetary policies. - ECON& 201 Microeconomics (5 credits)
Course purpose: Fundamentally, microeconomics is the study of how individuals, organizations, and markets make choices. By learning microeconomics, you become a more knowledgeable and valuable business professional to organizations. If you decide to run your own business, you are better positioned to make informed business decisions. (Required course for admission into the BAS in Applied Business Management.) - ECON& 202 Macroeconomics (5 credits)
Course purpose: Study of the organization and operation of the U.S. economy including unemployment, inflation, and GDP issues; the business cycle and long run growth; national income accounting; aggregate supply and aggregate demand; government spending, taxation, and the budget deficit/surplus; fiscal policy, the monetary system; the Federal Reserve Banking System; monetary policy, interest rates; and international trade. (Required course for admission into the BAS in Applied Business Management.)

- MNGT 282 Principles of Marketing (5 credits)
Course purpose: In this course you will learn that marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.
9. Leading Teams through Innovation and Change
- MNGT 294 Leading Teams Through Innovation and Change (5 credits)
Course purpose: Students will develop skill sets needed for leading teams and organization through uncertainty – the norm of today’s business environment. These skill sets are relevant for leaders in project, entrepreneurship, and intrapreneurship settings.
