The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets degree requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, work with the CIS/CNE Navigator to select the appropriate replacement. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time.
While this map is a great guide to courses required to complete the Associate in Applied Science Database Management and Design, you are responsible for fulfilling all degree requirements.

1. College Success
- COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)
Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond. Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.
2. Communications
Complete both English communication courses.
- ENGL& 101 English Composition I (5 credits)
Course purpose: IT careers and jobs require you to be able to write and communicate clearly using standard English. Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course. AND - ENGL& 235 Technical Writing (5 credits)
Course purpose: IT careers and jobs require you to be able to write and create technical documentation readable by project stakeholders.
3. Math Requirement
Note: The math course you select will depend on the 4-year transfer institution/degree that you select, and your math placement guidance
Choose ONE Math course. If you take Data Analytics programming courses, Math &146 is a required prerequisite.
4. Human Relations Requirement
Choose ONE Human Relations course to satisfy Pierce professional/technical program requirements. These courses teach human relations skills needed to navigate the modern workplace.

5. Humanities / Social Sciences / Natural Sciences Transfer Suggestion
Work with your advisor to decide which courses to take based on the 4-year transfer institution/degree you choose.
The courses suggested below are required BAS bridging courses for the Bellevue BAS program(s). Work with your advisor to choose courses from the Humanities, Social Sciences, or Natural Sciences suggestions in the subgroups below.
Humanities:
Course Purpose: Humanities study aspects of human society and culture. Fulfills the general education requirements for transfer to BAS degrees. :

Course(s) completed over FIVE years prior to graduation will not count towards an AAS. Outdated tech courses may need to be retaken to meet current technology and certification requirements. Please meet with your advisor to discuss any course retakes.

Choose 10-15 credits from Focus Area 1, Focus Area 2 and Focus Area 3 for a well-rounded IT preparation

- CIS 261 SQL Programming I (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn a common database querying language for reading, displaying, and updating data in a database. - CIS 269 SQL Programming II (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will continue to develop your Structured Query Language (SQL) skills by learning topics such as coding script files, stored procedures, and procedures, as well as fine tuning performance problems. - CIS 169 Introduction to Cloud Fundamentals (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn cloud computing basics from current cloud providers. Meets Cloud Fundamentals certification. - CIS 262 Cloud Data Fundamentals (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn core data concepts to work with data in the cloud. Meets Azure Data Fundamentals certification. - CIS 273 Data Visualization (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn to design, conceptualize and build data visualizations. - CIS 275 Business Intelligence (BI) (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn to prepare, model, visualize and analyze data using BI solutions. Meets Microsoft Certified Data Analyst Associate. - CIS 276 Data Analytics I (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn data analytics programming in Python using descriptive analytics. - CIS 277 Data Analytics II 5
Course purpose: You will learn data analytics programming in Python using predictive analytics and regression models. Focus Area 2 – Programming

Course purpose: You will learn basics of web development using scripting languages such as HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Stylesheets) and JavaScript (JS). - CS& 141 Computer Science I (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn basics of structured programming using control structures such as loops, and conditionals. Object-oriented programming concepts and objects will be introduced. - CS 202 Computer Science II (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn object-oriented programming concepts such as abstraction, inheritance, encapsulation and polymorphism. Learn basic data structures and related algorithms such as recursion. - CIS 123 Introduction to Object Oriented Programming (OOP) (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn object-oriented programming and related concepts such as inheritance, encapsulation and abstraction. You will learn how to code and manipulate basic data structures. - CIS 216 Server-Side Development (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will learn server-side coding using MVC architecture and access databases using Entity Framework. Focus Area 3 – Networks & Cybersecurity

CNE 241 + CNE 245 course series - CNE 241 CCNA 1: Introduction to Networks (5 credits)
Course purpose: This class prepares you to meet the requirements of the Cisco CCNA certification. - CNE 254 Fundamentals of Network Security (5 credits)
Course purpose: This class prepares you to meet the requirements of the CompTIA Security+ certification. Choose 241, 254 as a course series. - CNE 245 CCCA Cybersecurity Operations (5 credits)
Course purpose: This course introduces core security concepts and emphasizes the practical application of skills needed to monitor, detect, analyze and respond to cybercrime, cyberespionage, insider threats, advanced persistent threats, regulatory requirements, and other cybersecurity issues facing organizations.
