1. College Success

• COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)

• Course purpose:  A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

  • Successfully completing either COLLG 110 or COLLG 115 will fulfill the College Success requirement. 
  • A COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

2. English Composition I

• ENGL& 101 English Composition I (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Strong writing skills are a key need for occupational safety and health professionals in writing memos, letters, and reports.

• Note: Your advisor will assist you in reviewing your Guided Self Placement and selecting either the 5-credit or the 7-credit co-requisite ENGL& 101 + ENGLC 101 course. 

3. Productivity Software

• CIS 130 Productivity Software (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Microsoft office is a basic tool that is required by all occupational safety and health professionals in nearly all work environments to manage and communicate information and data.

4. Safety Management

• OSH 110 Safety Management (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Knowledge of basic safety management processes is a key element when implementing or managing a safety program.

5. Construction Safety

• CONST 250 Construction Safety and Accident Prevention (3 credits)

• Course purpose: Construction industry standards for accident prevention, hazard identification, and compliance responsibility are emphasized in conjunction with an overview of Occupational Safety and Health Act and other related federal and state legislative requirements.

6. Math Course Recommendation

• MATH& 146 Introduction to Stats (5 credits)
• BTECA 117 Business Mathematics (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Occupational safety and health professionals need a strong foundation in mathematics so they can interpret quantitative data reported in reports and research papers, and to appropriately convey quantitative data in meetings and documents.

• Note: The math course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following, the transfer institution/degree that you select, and your math placement guidance. Your advisor will assist you in selecting the relevant 5 or 7 credit course(s) based upon co-requisite options.

7. Incident Investigation

• OSH 160 Incident Investigation (3 credits)

• Course purpose: This course provides an overview of the theory and purpose of incident investigation, and how to conduct an investigation. Being able to conduct an incident investigation is a key skill for a professional in this field.

8. Industrial Security

• OSH 190 Industrial Security (3 credits)

• Course purpose: Occupational safety and health professionals must be aware of security issues within a work environment to control and limit public and employee access workplace hazards, as well as the role of a health and safety in relationship to workplace violence.

9. Technical Writing

• ENGL& 235 Technical Writing (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Strong writing skills are a key need for occupational safety and health professionals in writing memos, letters, and reports.

10. Training Techniques

• OSH 170 Training Techniques (3 credits)

• Course purpose: As an occupational safety and health professional you are frequently required to develop training and present information on how to prevent injuries to employees within an organization. This course provides an overview in the steps necessary to plan, develop and deliver training.

11. Human Relations in the Workplace

• BUS 240 Human Relations in the Workplace (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Occupational safety and health professionals need to have a basic understanding of how they need to convey and work within different leadership styles of an organization to implement OSH policies.

12. Construction Drawings: Printreading

• CONST 140 Construction Drawings: Printreading (5 credits)

• Course purpose: Construction management processes are introduced, including industry terminology, business practices, estimating/bidding, scheduling, project management, field operations and career pathways.

13. Risk Management

• OSH 150 Workers Comp and Risk Management (3 credits)

• Course purpose: Occupational safety and health professionals need a basic understanding of risk management and workers compensation regulations for injury reporting, injury prevention, employee compensation when worker is injured.

14. Materials & Methods

• CONST 160 Means and Methods I (5 credits)

• Course purpose: You will learn the technical aspects of construction systems, including the procedures and methods for masonry, steel, wood, and concrete construction. Recent trends in construction materials are also covered.

15. Internship

• OSH 291 OSH Internship (3 credits)
• CONST 198 Work-Based Learning (3 credits)

• Course purpose: The internship provides you an opportunity to observe and apply health and safety practices in a real work setting.
