Certificate of Pre-Paramedic

Created by Pierce faculty, ​​the certificate of pre-paramedic is designed for the working EMS professional to obtain their Paramedic pre-requisites in order to qualify to apply to the 1-year Paramedic program.. It provides you a clear path to complete your certificate by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career. The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets certificate requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time. 

While this map is a great guide to courses required to complete the Certificate of Pre-Paramedic, you are responsible for fulfilling all certificate requirements

1. College Success Course Recommendation


  • Course Purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond. 

    Note:  

    • Successfully completing either COLLG 110 or COLLG 115 will fulfill the College Success requirement.  

    • A COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course. 

    • Students who transfer in 30 or more college level credits are exempt from this requirement.  

2. Writing Skills


  • Paramedics are required to write reports for every patient contact and may be involved in writing case studies, presentations, and statements as needed as a regular part of their work. 

3. Anatomy and Physiology Preparation


Choose from one of the following three options:

Advising Notes: BIO& 241 (required in section #6 below) has prerequisite options. You may either take a) EMS 160, b) KINS 155, or c) BIOL& 160 *and* CHEM& 100. Choosing option c will add 5 credits to this pathway. Choose your prerequisite option based on interest or contact your advisor to discuss your options.

BIOL& AND CHEM&100 are required to fulfill Option 3.

  • Course Purpose: The science of life.  Scientific methodology, evolution, ecological perspectives, cells, biotechnology, genetics, diversity of life, metabolism and reproduction.  Lab included.  For students preparing for allied health professions and in conjunction with CHEM& 100 meets prerequisites for BIOL& 241. 

  • Course Purpose: Introductory course in chemistry in conjunction with BIOL& 160 for students intending to take BIOL& 241. Discussion of basic chemical concepts, including atomic structure, periodic properties, chemical bonding, and chemical nomenclature.

  • Course Purpose: Paramedics require a foundational knowledge of mathematics and the mathematical process to support critical thinking and reasoning skills used in daily interaction with patients.

6. Anatomy and Physiology (1 of 2)


Prerequisites: BIOL& 160 with a grade of 2.0 or better and CHEM& 100 with a 2.0 or better; or KINS 155 with a 2.0 or better, or EMS 160 with a 2.0 or better, or instructor permission.

Minimum Grade: 2.0 

 

  • Course Purpose: Supplies foundational knowledge regarding the human body and its systems that Paramedics use in every patient interaction. It is this foundational knowledge that allows the Paramedic to properly assess, diagnose, and treat their patients. 

     

7. Human Relations/Communications Course Requirement

  • Course Purpose: Paramedics are on-scene leaders who “manage” people in a professional environment. The Paramedic is one who is intimately involved in scene and crew leadership and is usually the “face” of EMS to patients as well as bystanders and members of the general public.

Minimum Grade: 2.0 

Prerequisites Completion of BIOL& 241 with 2.0 or better or instructor permission
