Course Description This is a support class that is attached to a corequisite MATH 98 class for students who have not met the MATH 98 prerequisites. Topics to be covered are those prerequisite skills necessary to learn the content of MATH 98, such as arithmetic with real numbers, order of operations, algebraic expressions, slope-intercept form of a linear equation, solving equations, graphing, exponents and radicals and skills for academic success.
Course Content A. Arithmetic with Real Numbers
B. Order of Operations
C. Algebraic Expressions
D. Slope-Intercept Form of a Linear Equation
E. Solving Equations
F. Graphing
G. Exponents and Radicals
H. Skills for Academic Success (Discipline-specific reading skills, time management, test-taking strategies, and growth mindset)
Student Outcomes Apply operations, arithmetic properties, and laws of exponents to simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions; and the properties of equality to solve linear, polynomial, rational and radical equations. Graph linear, polynomial, rational and radical functions. Employ strategies and study skills to comprehend, apply, and retain mathematical learning.
Degree Outcomes Quantitative & Symbolic Reasoning: Students utilize mathematical, symbolic, logical, graphical, geometric, or statistical analysis for the interpretation and solution of problems in the natural world and human society. Critical, Creative and Reflective Thinking: Students will be able to question, search for answers and meaning, and develop ideas that lead to action.
