Introduction to Keyboarding
(Only needed if no previous keyboarding experience)
2. Computer Application Lab
A total of 10 Computer Application Lab credits will be required to meet the requirements of this certificate. These courses can be taken throughout the certificate. Meet with advisor for placement of these courses in educational plan.
- BTECA 106 PC Operating System: Exploring and File Management (1 credit)
- BTECA 107 PC Operating System: Customizing Windows/Internet Basics (1 credit)
Course purpose: Prepares you for the Microsoft Office classes teaching management of files and folders and the use of Windows desktop. Basic computer literacy skills, such as minimize, maximize, and personalizing the desktop. Office skills require a basic understanding of computers and file management ability, i.e., naming and organizing files and folders. - BTECA 110 Microsoft Word: Prepare and Edit Documents (1 credit)
- BTECA 111 Microsoft Word: Format Pages and Objects (1 credit)
- BTECA 112 Microsoft Word: Print, Tables and Customization (1 credit)
- BTECA 113 Microsoft Word: Track Changes, Editing and Design (1 credits)
Course purpose: Word courses prepare you for typing documents and learning a wide breadth of what the software is capable of in an office setting. Understanding the wide capabilities of the Microsoft Word software helps develop efficient office administrator skills making employees quicker and more organized with their workload when dealing with the written communication in an office setting. - BTECA 121 Microsoft Excel: Prepare Basic Worksheets (1 credit)
- BTECA 122 Microsoft Excel: Manage Workbooks (1 credit)
- BTECA 123 Microsoft Excel: Financial Formulas and Charts (1 credit)
- BTECA 124 Microsoft Excel: Manage Tables and Import Data (1 credit)
- BTECA 130 Microsoft PowerPoint: Create and Modify a PowerPoint Presentation (1 credit)
- BTECA 131 Microsoft PowerPoint: Visual Elements & Themes (1 credit)
- BTECA 132 Microsoft PowerPoint: Customize and Share Presentation (1 credit)
- BTECA 140 Microsoft Access: Create Tables and Relationships (1 credit)
- BTECA 141 Microsoft Access: Create Queries and Forms (1 credit)
- BTECA 142 Microsoft Access: Create Reports and Manage Data (1 credit)
Course purpose: This could be Excel, Access, or PowerPoint, all of which would be utilized in an office setting to improve clerical efficiencies. The appropriate course would be chosen according to the students’ workforce goals.
3. College Success
- COLLG 110 College Success (3 credits)
Course purpose: A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond. Note: The College Success course you select will depend on the Career Pathway Map you are following. Your advisor will assist you in selecting either the 3- or 5- credit version of the course. Should you choose to repeat a College Success course you must enroll in a College Success course with the same credit amount as the original course; a COLLG 110 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 110 course and a COLLG 115 course grade can only be replaced with a grade from another COLLG 115 course.

4. Keyboard Development and Document Formatting
Take two credits one quarter followed by the remaining two credits the following quarter. All four courses are required to complete the degree.
6. Business English II
- BTECA 116 Business English II (3 credits)
Course purpose: Further study and practice with the writing process to create effective business memoranda, letters, and short reports. You will continue to build a strong business vocabulary and fluency with punctuation and rules. Job applicants must be able to write coherent messages with correct grammar for internal and external communication.
7. Business Math
- BTECA 117 Business Mathematics (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will practice skills in banking such as keeping a checkbook and balancing it. Solving equations for the unknown. Practicing percent and fractions. Understanding discounts, markups, and markdowns. Insight into perishables, simple interest promissory notes, discount notes, and the discount process, compound interest and present value. Installment buying and revolving credit, basic statistics, metric supplement depreciation, inventory, and overhead. Industry often requires basic bookkeeping and collection of funds from invoices and calculation of purchase orders. Math knowledge is necessary to write correct formulas in often used Excel spreadsheets for budgeting and other financial purposes.
8. Introduction to the Medical Office
- BTECM 149 Introduction to the Medical Office (5 credits)
Course purpose: You are introduced to topics that occur in a Medical Office setting. In this course you learn about the history of healthcare systems, overview of types of healthcare facilities, roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals, importance of teamwork and process improvement, as well as strategies for exploring the job market.
9. Medical Terminology I
- BTECM 150 Medical Terminology I (5 credits)
Course purpose: You are introduced to word forms, pre-fixes, suffixes, and root words. You will analyze medical terms through the knowledge of the Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. You will practice pronunciation and spelling of medical terms. You will learn how to utilize a medical dictionary and other references, as well as the formation of nouns, adjectives, and plurals of medical words. Knowledge of medical terminology is beneficial to the medical office administrative assistant when communicating with patients and medical clinicians. This course is broken into two 5-credit courses that cover all the systems of the body.
10. Microsoft Outlook
- BTECA 180 Microsoft Outlook (3 credits)
Course purpose: You will demonstrate skills in each tool utilized in Outlook: Calendar, email, scheduling, tasks, etc. which most offices are using these days.
11. Medical Terminology II
13. Human Biology
- BIOL& 170 Human Biology: Anatomy & Physiology (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will gain a comprehensive study of the human body, its structure, and its function. A non-lab course appropriate for non-science majors. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology is beneficial to the medical office administrative assistant when communicating with patients and medical clinicians.

16. Medical Claims and Insurance Management
- BTECM 250 Medical Claims and Insurance Management (5 credits)
Course purpose: You are introduced to a variety of medical forms used in industry: CMS-1500, UB-92, referrals, and referral requests. You will gain an understanding of documentation guidelines and completion of medical claim forms for Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, Worker’s Compensation and Labor & Industries.

- BTECA 246 Cooperative Work Experience (5 credits)
Course purpose: You will gain practice in a workplace setting, while networking, establishing work experience for your resume, and hopefully ultimately gaining a job, which is what most students in the professional technical field want. Or - BTECA 247 Pathway to Career Success (5 credits)
Course purpose: This course is an option for students in lieu of the Cooperative Work-based Learning Experience (BTECA 246). This course is designed to prepare students for a job in their specific field of study whether it be a medical office or a general office. Students will implement a variety of the skills they have learned throughout their degree such as job searching skills, teamwork, communication skills, goal setting, time management, and leadership.
