  • Course purpose:  A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

2. Business English I


  • Course purpose: This course will help you build the skills needed to prepare grammatically correct business documents. You will develop skills in how to edit documents for grammatical correctness.

3. Introduction to the Medical Office


  • Course purpose: In this course you will be introduced to topics that occur in a Medical Office setting: History of healthcare system, overview of types of healthcare facilities, roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals, importance of team work and process improvement, as well as strategies for exploring the job market.

4. Business Mathematics


  • Course purpose: In this class you will learn and practice skills used in business such as keeping a checkbook and balancing it. Concepts covered in this course include solving for equations for the unknown, calculating percents and fractions.  You will learn about  discounts, markups, and markdowns and will gain insight into perishables, simple interest promissory notes, discount notes, and the discount process, compound interest and present value.

7. Medical Terminology


Take one course each quarter until sequence is finished.

  • Course purpose: In this course you will be introduced to word forms, pre-fixes, suffixes, and root words. You will analyze medical terms through the knowledge of the Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes

  • Course purpose:  In this course you will continue to learn the rest of the body systems practicing all the same skills as you did in BTECM 150.

8. Medical Forms and Referral Management


  • Course purpose: In this course you will be introduced to a variety of medical forms used in industry: CMS-1500, UB-92, referrals, and referral requests. You will gain an understanding of documentation guidelines and completion of medical claim forms for Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, Worker’s Compensation and Labor & Industries.

9. Electronic Health Records


  • Course purpose: In this course you will complete common work tasks and practice data entry while creating a variety of electronic medical records (EMRs) in both inpatient and outpatient settings using training software. In addition you will gain an understanding of existing and evolving government-driven standards and regulations as they apply to the healthcare environment.

Action Item: Prepare for Internship


At this point, you need to prepare for Internship BTECA 245 if completing the Medical Billing and Coding Certificate only.
