  • Course purpose:  A foundational course to explore and affirm a career choice and build upon the skills, knowledge, and resources that will support you at Pierce College and beyond.

2. Business English I


  • Course purpose: This course will help you build the skills needed to prepare grammatically correct business documents. You will develop skills in how to edits documents for grammatical correctness, and create coherent, well-organized sentences and paragraphs. 

3. Introduction to the Medical Office


  • Course purpose: In this course you will be introduced to topics that occur in a medical office setting: You will learn the history of the healthcare system, overview of types of healthcare facilities, roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals, importance of team work and process improvement, as well as strategies for exploring the job market.

  • Course purpose: Further study and practice with the writing process to create effective business memoranda, letters, and short reports. You will continue to build a strong business vocabulary and fluency with punctuation and rules. 

7. Medical Terminology I


  • Course purpose: In this course you will be introduced to word forms, prefixes, suffixes, and root words. You will analyze medical terms through the knowledge of the Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

9. Customer Relationship Management


  • Course purpose: In this course you will develop and utilize creative solutions and proactive problem-solving/decision making to meet customer needs. You will analyze and explain the various elements of a customer service culture. In addition, you will develop and apply strategies for communicating with different behavioral and personality styles.

10. Business Mathematics


  • Course purpose: In this class you will learn and practice skills used in business such as keeping a checkbook and balancing it. Concepts covered in this cousre include solving for equations for the unknown, calculating percents and fractions.  You will learn about  discounts, markups, and markdowns and will gain insight into perishables, simple interest promissory notes, discount notes, and the discount process, compound interest and present value. 

11. Medical Forms and Referral Management


  • Course purpose: In this course you will be introduced to a variety of medical forms used in industry: CMS-1500, UB-92, referrals, and referral requests. You will gain an understanding of documentation guidelines and completion of medical claim forms for Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, Worker’s Compensation and Labor & Industries.

12. Electronic Health Records


  • Course purpose: In this course you will complete common work tasks and practice data entry while creating a variety of electronic medical records (EMRs) in both inpatient and outpatient settings using training software. In addition you will gain an understanding of existing and evolving government-driven standards and regulations as they apply to the healthcare environment. 

13. Human Relations in the Workplace


  • Course purpose: In this course you will learn to distinguish personality styles, learning styles, conflict resolution strategies, and communication styles in order to better prepare you for working in the office environment.
