EMS 212 Emergency Medical Technician III (5 credits)



Prerequisite EMS 211  with at least a 2.0 grade and concurrent enrollment in EMT 210 and EMT 211. 

Course Description
A progression of skills and knowledge obtained in EMS 210 and EMS 211. Course requires students to execute comprehensive assessments to implement appropriate treatment for both medical and traumatic emergencies. Students will solidify the knowledge gained in the classroom through their individual emergency department rotation.

Course Content
A. Patient assessment and monitoring: students will develop proficiency with the skills of trauma management assessing for and treating injuries such as; bleeding, abdominal and genitourinary, orthopedic/soft tissue, chest, head, neck and spine/nervous system, and multi-system traumas.
B. Special patient populations: students will increase their knowledge, skills and abilities of communication, assessment and management of emergencies involve special populations such as; obstetrics, neonatal care, pediatrics, geriatrics, and patients with special challenges.
C. EMS Operations: students will develop an understanding of EMS operations through the overviews of the basics of ground ambulance operations, incident management, air medical, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials/mass casualty incident, terrorism & disaster.
D. Comprehensive end of course practical skills and final written examination: students will complete
medical/trauma practical assessments. The students will also complete a final written examination.
E. Emergency department rotation: students will apply knowledge, skills and abilities obtained throughout the course integrating firsthand real-world experience during a rotation at a local emergency department.

1. Assess, evaluate and differentiate proper treatment due to signs and symptoms associated with mechanisms of injuries.

2. Access and utilize knowledge necessary to conduct a patient evaluation and administer emergency treatment short of those rendered by advanced life support.

3. Operate as an emergency service provider using sound judgement; applying rationality, self-awareness, critical thinking and discipline in responding to emergency situations.

4. Effectively operate and maintain equipment used in emergency patient care.

5. Demonstrate communication of essential continuing patient care information to advance life support personnel.
