ENGR& 215 Dynamics (5 credits)
Distribution Area Fulfilled General Transfer Elective Formerly ENGR 230 - CCN
Prerequisite ENGR& 214 and PHYS& 221 with a grade of 1.5 or better in each course
Course Description An introduction to the principles of Dynamics. Students will analyze the kinematic behavior of particles and rigid bodies, using vector notation and different coordinate systems and their kinetic behavior using Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion, work and energy, and impulse and momentum methods. Throughout the course, vectors will be utilized.
Course Content Kinematics of a particle’s position, velocity, acceleration
Rectangular, polar, and normal-tangential coordinates
Kinematics of translation and rotation of rigid bodies
Kinetics of particles and rigid bodies using Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
Kinetics of particles and rigid bodies using work and energy
Kinetics of particles and rigid bodies using impulse and momentum
Student Outcomes
- Analyze the kinematic behavior of a particle or rigid body in rectilinear, curvilinear, dependent, or relative motion
- Determine kinematic behavior using analytical and graphical methods.
- Analyze 2D and 3D motion using applicable coordinate systems.
- Analyze the kinetic behavior of particles and rigid bodies using Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion, work and energy, and impulse and momentum.
- Work effectively with peers to solve dynamics-related engineering problems.
Degree Outcomes Critical, Creative and Reflective Thinking
Graduates will evaluate, analyze, synthesize, and generate ideas; construct informed, meaningful, and justifiable conclusions; and process feelings, beliefs, biases, strengths, and weaknesses as they relate to their thinking, decisions, and creations.
