KINS 250 Kinesiology (5 credits)

Prerequisite Completion of KINS 155 with a grade of 2.0 or better

Course Description
Introduction to anatomical kinesiology, both skeletal and muscular structures and their application in the study of human movement to evaluate, improve and enhance all variables of fitness and overall health of individuals.

Course Content
A.  Anatomical Terminology
B.  Neuromuscular fundamentals
C.  Loading mechanics
D.  Biomechanics
E.  Joint movement analysis
F.  Skeletal muscle identification
G.  Structural abnormalities in the human body
H. Human movement analysis
I.  Application of various exercise modalities and techniques.
J.  Assessment of flexibility
K.  Library, research and analysis

Student Outcomes
1. Articulate the basic neuromuscular concepts in relation to how muscles function in joint motions and the neural control mechanisms for human movement.

2. Analyze the effects of mechanical loading on bone, muscles, cartilaginous and ligamentous structures in the human body.

3. Apply the concepts of kinematics and kinetics to help improve physical performance using both quantitative and qualitative data.

4. Apply fundamental human movement principles through analysis of human movement at the joint specific level.

5. Analyze human structural abnormalities, postural abnormalities, deformities and muscular imbalances in order to develop an exercise prescription.

6. Analyze common exercises to determine joint movements, joint Range of Motion (ROM), muscles involved, contraction types in order to develop an exercise prescription.

7. Evaluate information and its sources critically using scientific research.

Degree Outcomes
Critical, Creative, and Reflective Thinking: Graduates will evaluate, analyze, and synthesize information and ideas in order to construct informed, meaningful, and justifiable conclusions.

Program Outcome #1: Promote the health and fitness of clients by using and articulating the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines to created environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive and challenging for all clients. (Alignment with National Certifying Body)

Progra Outcome #5:  Identify and conduct oneself as a member of the health and fitness profession by knowing and using ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to health and fitness practices as detailed by ACSM. (Alignment with National Certifying Body and Quality Assurance)
