KINS 258 Care and Prevention of Injuries (3 credits)



Course Description
A course introducing students to the field of athletic training, injury prevention, treatment, emergent care, examination of injury, therapeutic interventions, wellness promotion and education, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

A. Injury prevention, recognition, healing process, and fitness and wellness principles
B. Physical and mental health
C. Anatomical review
D. Emergency action planning and risk management
E. Bloodborne pathogen precautions
F. Therapeutic exercise
G. Wrapping and taping technique
H. Interpersonal communication
I. Ethics and cultural competence
J. Information competency

Student Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and understanding of the importance of injury prevention principles, fitness and wellness principles, and the recognition of acute injuries and illnesses.
  2. Demonstrate skills and procedures for use in emergency situations. 
  3. Apply procedures, practices, and methods designed to provide therapeutic interventions in a variety of settings (schools, healthcare, etc.).
  4. Demonstrate library skills and research methodology to interpret evidence-based research related to athletic training.
  5. Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills to exchange information related to all aspects of the health-care process including, but not limited to, the patient, physicians, coaches, parents, etc. as part of an inter-professional team.
