EM 410 Ethics & Critical Thinking in Emergency Management (5 credits)



Prerequisite Current enrollment in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Emergency Management program.

Course Description
This course provides students with an overview of ethical frameworks and critical decision-making models likely to be used in Emergency Management environments, with an emphasis on real-world application.

D. Ethical Dilemmas 
E. Ethical Decision Making 
F. Civil Liberties 
G. Diversity, Whole Community, and Access and Functional Needs 
H. Ethical Frameworks and Theories (consequentialist, non-consequentialist, agent-centered)

Student Outcomes
  1. Differentiate between morals, values, and ethics
  2. Describe ethical principles that are common in emergency management   
  3. Apply ethical frameworks and critical thinking models to complex emergency management problems.  
  4. Devise strategies to address issues faced by historically underserved communities in emergency management processes.  
  5. Identify ethical issues in case studies and propose alternate decisions that might lead to more equitable outcomes.
