EMS 216 Introduction to Emergency Medical Services (4 credits)



Prerequisite Enrollment in the Paramedic Program.

Course Description
Introduces the concept of pre-hospital care. Fundamental principles of the practice are presented in this combination on-line, in-person course.

Course Content
Modern EMS and how major events influenced its development.
Core elements of pre-hospital care as determined by care as determined by research.
Defining morals, ethics, and legality to EMS care and consent.
Common causes of stress and how to promote wellness.
Importance of personal protection and universal precautions.

Student Outcomes
  1. Describe the major events that influence the development of the modern EMS system in the United States.
  2. Identify the key elements of EMS research and its benefit to pre-hospital care.
  3. Define major medical legal issues in providing prehospital patient care.
  4. Discuss physical and psychological stress and management in EMS.
  5. Describe the steps to take for personal protection from airborne and blood borne pathogens.
